ここでの（オックスフォード大学での）教育の仕組みが、何よりも学生の個別指導を重視しているからである。<o:p></o:p>

とくに学部教育で行われるチュートリアルと呼ばれる個別指導は、毎回、多くの文献を読み、読んだものをもとに多くを書き、書いたものをもとに議論すると言う構成を基本とする。「古典」を含む大量の知識を使って、読み、書き、議論するという三つを、たいていは週に一回のペースで繰り返すことで、考える力や批判力を身につけさせようというのである。<o:p></o:p>
