雪国出身者は口が重い。その上、人見知り。こうした性格とずうっとつきあい続けている私だが、外国人を前にすると余計に緊張してしまう。程度の差こそあれ、研究室の大学院生も同様なのかもしれない。
学会４日目。小休止で濃いめのコーヒーを頂いていると、イギリス人女性が向かいの席につく。すると、お気に入りのiPhoneを取り出し、英日翻訳アプリを起動させて、『初めまして。』と日本語音声が鳴り響く。オヨヨ。極度の外国人恐怖症が一気に氷解し、その方と会話が弾む。おまけに、甘～いチョコレートまで頂いた。
今回、旧知の友達に会うことができ、旧交を温める。なかには１６年ぶりの友も。研究上の問題点は世界共通で、「いやはやお互いに大変だよね」と愚痴をこぼし合う。それから、共通の友達の消息に関する情報交換。彼らもそれぞれの道を歩んでいる。
大学院生の皆さんには、海外で開催される国際学会に是非とも参加して欲しい。そこで、まだ公表されていない第一線の研究に触れながら、海外研究者と研究の議論などをして欲しい。きっと、今後の研究のプラスになるはず。
さあ、勇気を出して研究の紹介をしよう！ AさんもBさんも積極的に海外研究者と交流できたようで、何より。
とても刺激的で示唆に富む学会であった。さあ、札幌に帰ろう。
