本日、厳冬期での野外調査における安全訓練を実施。その道の専門家から直接指導して頂く。復習を繰り返し、いざという時でも冷静かつ迅速に対応できるようにしておきたいもの。

氷点下の札幌から熱帯の台湾へ。２度目の台湾訪問。前回は、６月中旬でクラっとするくらいの暑さであった。今回は、肌寒く、雨の日が続いている。

８月１９日午前１１時４５分成田発ロンドン行きの飛行機。シートベルトサインが消灯し、眼下には燧ヶ岳、尾瀬沼、そして尾瀬ケ原。まさに奇跡的なタイミングで空からの尾瀬の美しい景色。

更に北上し、新潟市の砂丘湖・佐潟。想い出のフィールドだ。

２６日に帰国し、NHKスペシャル『奇跡の湿原尾瀬』を拝見する。素晴らしい映像美。それに合わせた三宅民夫アナウンサーのナレーション。制作スタッフの力作であると思う。

 

番組最後で、尾瀬の池塘（ちとう）で調査している野原精一さん（国立環境研究所）の映像を拝見しているうちに、ホロッと。尾瀬の生態系を２５年にわたり見つめ続けいている野原さん。きっと今日も尾瀬で調査をしているに違いない。

雪解け。さあ、フィールド調査再開です。

 

冬の間、お腹周りが増加。フィールドでバテないよう、シェイプアップと体力づくりに励まねば。

湖畔にて

北海道の夏は短い。水界生態系を研究対象にしている当研究室では、今が「書き入れ時」。 湖畔にて、ゴムボートを膨らます。さあ、調査だ。

今回は、２艘での調査（ライフジャケットを必ず着用）。

湖畔にて、不測の事態に備えて、必ず一人は待機。湖畔から見えない場所で調査している同僚を気遣う。トランシーバーが彼らとの連絡手段。熊出没対策のため、熊よけスプレーを用意。さらに、携帯ラジオの音量を上げながら、ひたすら待ち続ける。

無事調査終了。湖畔にて、調査機材の撤収。

さあ、速やかに研究室へ戻り、実験をしよう！

支え合い

野外調査、特に、水環境においてボートを使用する場合、同僚の支援が不可欠。互いの信頼関係のもとに、支え合うことは美しい。 調査後、疲労困憊して研究室に戻る。微生物生態研究の場合、採取した試料を速やかに適切な処理を行い、実験あるいは解析に供しなければならない。我が身に鞭を打ちながらの作業でもある。時に、徹夜になることもある。 しかしながら、調査後の機材を速やかに洗浄し、片付けも行わなければならない。特に、ボートやロープ等は水道水で洗った後、乾燥させる必要がある。そんな時、研究室で待機してくれている同僚の支援は、涙がチョチョギレルほどありがたい。こうした伝統も、先輩から後輩へ継承していきたい。

湖上にて

遠く遥か、例えば、ヨーロッパの中世の街を訪れる。堅牢な古城にて、しばし、人生のこと、これからのことなど、哲学的な物思いに耽るのも悪くはない。

身近な、例えば、北海道の山間部を訪れる。小宇宙としての湖上にて、ビンビンに科学のアンテナを振り立てて、あれやこれやと観察しながら、試料を採取するのも良いものだ。

大学院生のAさんが、「チシマフウロ、綺麗ですね」と。そうですね。愛らしい花ですが、北の厳しい気候の中、この時期に花を咲かせています。

ちなみに、先週登った徳舜瞥山の山頂では、より薄めの紫色の花。

この季節、北のフィールドに出かけるのも良し。

29年ぶりの厚岸臨海実験所（北大の研究教育施設）。あの頃、厚岸に再訪することなんて、夢にも思いませんでした。

札幌から車で７時間かけてようやく到着。長い道のりでした。

標高2700m越え、ハアハア言いながら山歩き。久しぶりにさわやかな空気を味わう。<o:p></o:p>
