今日はアカデミー賞の授賞式ですね。

With last year's viewing audience for the telecast at a historic low of 32 million, the academy has devised a new strategy for enticing more viewers Feb.22: Ask presenters to eschew the pre-show red carpet so people will tune in to see who's handing out the awards-or at least to see what they're wearing.(Los Angeles Times)
昨年の史上最低の視聴率に懲りて今年はプレゼンターにできるだけレッド・カーペットショーへ姿を見せないで欲しいと頼んでいるそうな。
レッドカーペットで見られないなら本番のショーを見るしかないだろうという作戦ですが、果たしてこれが功を奏するのか。
"eschew"は「避ける、控える」という意味。
避けるは他に、avoid, shun, shy, keep away なんていうのもありますが、使い方に違いはあるんだろうか。
この記事の中にも出てきましたが、レッドカーペットでおなじみの質問が
"Who are you wearing?"
誰を着てるの?ってちょっと変ですが、今日のドレスは誰のデザイン?ってことなんですね。
今年の主流は「ハリウッドシルバー」だそうですよ。
