TO COVER, COVERAGE

　ブルース・スプリングスティーン（Bruce Springsteen, 1949- ）の1984年のヒット曲に、"Cover Me"がある。

　The times are tough now, just getting tougher

　This old world is rough, it's just getting rougher

　Cover me, come on baby, cover me

　今の時代は厳しい。さらにきびしくなっている

　この世界は荒れている。荒さがさらに増している　

　おれを守ってくれ、ベイビー、守ってくれよ

　to coverは、「おおう、……にふたをする、おおい隠す」であるが、ここでは「かばう、守る、保護する」の意味でも使われている。　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、to coverのこの意味の用法を学習しよう。　

　「（費用・損失を）償う（に足る）、（担保で）補償する、……に保険をかける」の意味でも使われる。
