本日のGetUpEnglishは本書「結びに」の一節を紹介する。
I spent the entire day before my visit traveling north by train from Tokyo. The further we strayed from the sprawling metropolis the emptier the train became and the wilder the scenery outside. As we passed through the long underwater tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido, the conductor welcomed us to the north country where “delicious food and beautiful nature” awaited, a classic romanticization of the far north. But the next morning as I took a series of trains and busses from the capital of Sapporo to Nibutani, the countryside struck me as desolate. The snow was mostly melted but the fields and forests still lacked even the faintest hint of green, and the periodic dull, gray towns felt like scabs on the land.
前日は列車で東京から北上してここに来るまで一日かかった。無計画に広がる大都会の街並みを離れると、乗客は少なくなり、自然の風景に包み込まれた。
本州と北海道をつなぐ長い水中トンネルを抜けると「おいしい料理と美しい自然」が楽しめる北国であった。極北の古典浪漫の国に入ったのだ。
だが、翌朝、札幌から電車とバスを乗り換えて地方に向かうと、荒涼とした風景が広がった。雪はほぼ解けていたが、野原も森も緑は何ひとつ見えず、土地のかさぶたのようなくすんだ灰色の町が次々に目に飛び込んでくるだけである。
The further we strayed from the sprawling metropolis the emptier the train became and the wilder the scenery outside: the further... the emptierで、「the＋比較、the＋比較」の「～すればするほど、…になる」だが、この「定訳」を充てることなく、「時間の進行とともに、そうなっていく」のがわわかるようにすればいいケースがほとんどだと思う。
As we passed through the long underwater tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido,...: これは言うまでもなく、川端康成の『雪国』の冒頭「国境の長いトンネルを抜けると雪国であった」を意識した表現なので、そうであるとわかるようにしたい。
the conductor: 車掌。ここでは車内のアナウンスで到着が告げられたので、そうだとわかる処理にすればいい。
このような詩的で文学的な表現が随所に織り込まれているので、訳も相当気を使う必要がある。

現在、英日翻訳書がもう1冊進行中だ。
ビジネス書なのだが、これが実に面白いし、TOEIC L&Rの問題を書く際に参考になる表現がたくさん出てくる。
今日のGetUpEnglishは本書から一部紹介する。
The assumption is that these individuals, who are technically competent, will be good at managing because they have illustrated that they are good at producing. This assumption, however, doesn’t reflect many new managers’ realities; they often find that learning to manage is like learning to speak a different language. As a result, some of them micromanage while others continue to be individual contributors despite their managerial titles; both behaviors irritate their direct reports and prevent them from learning and growing in a new role.
技術的にすぐれたもの持つ者はすぐれた生産者であるとこれまで示してきたわけだから、いい管理職にもなれるはずだという考え方はある。だが、これは新たに管理職に就く多くの者たちの現実が見えていない。人を管理することを学ぶのは、異なる言語に近いと思ってしまうと思う者も少なくないのだ。結果として、細かいことまで徹底的に管理する上司になる者もいれば、管理職の肩書をもったまま、相変わらず自分の仕事を追い求めようとする者もいる。どちらにしろ、直属の部下を苛立たせるだけで、彼らに新しい役割を与え、学び、成長させることはない。
competent: 能力のある, 有能な。これもTOEIC L&Rテストで見たことがあるようし、TOEIC SWのWritingではよく使う。
micromanage: 細かい点に至るまで管理[統制]する
report(s): 部下、配下。direct reportで「直属の部下」。こちらもTOEIC L&RのPart 5の語彙問題、あるいはPart 7のmultiple passages問題で複数の人物の関係を問うような際に見たような気がする（定かではない）。模擬問題を書く際にはぜひ使ってみたい語彙だ。
英日翻訳も日英翻訳も基本的にいただける仕事はすべて対応させていただくという姿勢でいるし、それで仕事の幅は拡大できるし、翻訳の技術向上もはかれる。

本日のGetUpEnglishは本書第5章の一節を紹介する。
Back at the guesthouse that night, my housemates and I followed Okamoto’s recommendation and feasted on a simple meal of fresh wakame shabu-shabu. I rinsed the fronds, cut them stipe and all into three- or four-inch lengths, and arranged them on a large plate. At the table, we set a clay pot full of boiling water seasoned with a piece of konbu over a portable gas burner and took turns swishing the wakame through the bubbling water. Almost instantly the color changed from amber to a brilliant emerald green. The transformation was so magical we couldn’t help plunging piece after piece into the pot and then plucking them back out to dip in a dish of citrusy ponzu sauce. This was the happy end to my brief, not so successful search for wild seaweed on Shikoku.
その晩、岡本さんが勧めてくれた簡単にできる生ワカメのしゃぶしゃぶを、宿で同行者たちとおいしくいただいた。ワカメを水通して、七センチから十センチぐらいに切り分けて大皿に並べる。テーブルに携帯コンロをセットして、昆布で味つけした湯をいっぱいに注いだ鍋を置く。そしてまさにしゃぶしゃぶのように、切り分けたワカメを各自ぐつぐつ煮立った湯にくぐらせるのだ。湯につけると、琥珀色のワカメがたちまち鮮やかなエメラルドグリーンに変わる。それは魔法のようで、わたしたちは気づけばワカメを次々に湯にくぐらせて、手元の器に注いだみかんポン酢につけて、口に運んでいた。
四国の天然ワカメの調査は思うように進まなかったが、おかげで最後にいい思いができた。
これはほんとにすばらしい本だ。「ああ、著者はこの風景を見ていたのか」と感じられる瞬間がたまらない。
本業があって翻訳専業の方よりも時間が限られている上に、その本業が多忙を極めているので、作業が遅れ気味で、編集者の皆さんに大変なご迷惑をおかけして心苦しい限りだが、大幅な遅れがないように万事進めたい。
exorbitantは「(欲望･要求･値段などが)法外な、途方もない」。

ロシア最強の女帝、エカチェリーナ2世の生涯
After Peter the Great died in 1725, Russia had lots of short-lived rulers. In 1762, after a six-month reign, Emperor Peter III died, leaving his wife Catherine to rule alone as empress. In fact, Catherine was one of five female rulers to govern Russia in the 18th century, which was very unusual in the world at the time.
1725年のピョートル大帝没後、ロシアには何人も短命の支配者が出てきた。1762年、皇帝ピョートル3世が在位6か月で没すると、妻キャサリンが皇后として統治することになった。18世紀当時のロシアでは女帝はめずらしかったが、キャサリンはそのひとりだ。
Catherine ruled Russia for 34 years, making her Russia’s longest-serving leader. She became known as Catherine the Great, even though her actual name was Sophie and she was born in what is now Poland, not Russia.
キャサリンのロシア皇帝の在位は34年におよぶ。これはロシア帝国の統治者の最長記録となる。本名はソフィー、ロシアではなく現在のポーランドで生まれたが、エカチェリーナ2世として世に知られることになる。
