流氷への旅（８）

その二階建てのコンクリートの建物がいかにもにもどっしりと落ちついて見えたが、吹きさらしの丘の上にぽつんとあるのだが、少し淋しげでもあった。

美砂は札幌で買った滑り止めのきいたロングブーツを慎重に運びながら、雪道を灰色の建物に向かった。

入り口の正面には蝦夷松が雪の中から顔を出し、その左手に、コンクリートの門があった。雪は門の半ばまで埋め、その上半分の御影石に、「北海道大学低温科学研究所付属流氷研究所」と、刻まれている。

美砂はしばらくそれを眺めてから、正面玄関のガラスのドアを押した。

Dear Prof 福井,

Thank you for posting this. Basically I can't read much Japanese, and I just bumped into your blog by googling the book by Junichi Watanabe. I read this book about 10 years ago, and the scenes of Monbetsu and Sapporo have always been in my mind. Two years ago I visited Monbetsu and found this building. It was nice to see it still standing there. The entranced was closed, but I could still see some furniture and decoration on the wall. It was the most memorable moment in my short journey to Hokkaido.

Will this building be used for other purposes later?

Dear Pat-san,

Thank you for your comment from Hong Kong. I am very glad to hear that you visited our institute building in Monbetsu although it was already closed five years ago. If you have any opportunity to visit Sapporo in future, please stop at the white building of our institute. I am sure that you can find something shown in the novel by Junichi Watanabe.

Actually I did visit Sapporo and stayed in a friend's apartment near the University of Hokkaido. Since time was limited, I didn't go into the campus. But I just found that the apartment was just a few blocks away from where 美砂 used to live, haha~

It seems that the novel was reprinted in Japanese earlier this year, and I also managed to buy a Simplified-Chinese version of it. Just wondering why it becomes popular again :D
