A Statue

2011年04月08日 | トーストマスターズ
Since a severe natural disaster of earthquake and tsunami attacked on east Japan, I have been feeling strong friendship with people overseas.

I got several warm and supporting email messages from my friends in the country I have lived before.
Among others many came from Taiwan where I lived in for nearly three years.
I was told that they have launched a fund raising campaign praying for Japan called "Fight & Smile (相信希望)" . What great compassion they have!
Speaking of compassion and Taiwan, It reminds me of a Japanese who devoted himself to develop Taiwan..

It was about 80 years ago when Taiwan was under control of Japan. There lived a Japanese engineer who worked for the Taiwan Administration Office. His name is Yoichi Hatta (Show a flip). He is more famous in Taiwan than in Japan. He planned the largest dam in Asia at that time and constructed it together with irrigation network in southern part of Taiwan. It took almost 10 years for completion.
The dam can reserve 150 million tons of water which is equivalent to three fourth of the Kurobe Dam in Japan. And the irrigation channels spread 160 thousand km which is 13 times longer than the Aichi channel largest in Japan. It also benefits one million farmers..

The local people appreciated his great contribution and erected his statue after completion of the dam (this is a photo of the statue- circulate printed materials).
But in the last 80 years they faced two major crises to keep this statue as it was. Once during the Second World War when metallic products were forced to dedicate to the state for military purposes. Twice under the Chang Kai Shek (蒋介石) administration when all the Japan related monuments were banned to hold. The local farmers hided the statue with risks of life and successfully escaped from the both crises for over 30 years by the year of 1981.

From then they have continuously hold a memorial ceremony every year.

Thus Mr. Hatta’s spirit has been succeeded to the people in Taiwan.
When I learned this episode, I thought I should visit there but have not made it yet. I will do it in near feature and would like to feel the spirit of the great contribution and compassion.
Let’ s pray for Japan again.
