私は建築の研究者だから、フィールドワークは私の仕事である。そして訪れる所は、全て観光地ではない。日本で紹介されたことがない場所ばかりだ。しかし、その地域固有の日常の生活の風景を見せてくれる。
例えば中国の調査では、毎日タクシーをチャーターし古い集落を訪ねた。これまで、まだ誰も訪れたことがない集落ばかりだ。時には宿を朝早立ちして往復12時間かかった事もあった。そうして300〜400km/日ぐらい走り回り、素晴らしい中国の環境に出会うことができた。
フィールドワークは、限られた時間の中で動き回る事ができる足が必要だ。フィリピンではNIKKAの叔父さんがトライシクルのドライバーだった。
それならば、「トライシクルでブラカンをフィールドワークをしたい」と私は要望した。そしたら「明日は何時に来る?」、と簡単に決まってしまった。
叔父さんのトライシクルで連日ブラカンの農道を走り回った。叔父さんはブラカンをよく知っており、私が何を撮影したいかを理解していた。だからフィールドワークの仕事では最適のドライバーだった。
もちろん私の仕事だから1,000piso/日のフィーを支払った。市内のトライシクルは10分で200pisoだった経験をした。すると2時間のフィールドワークに案内してくれる叔父さんのトライシクルは安すぎた。あとで1,500pisoにした。私が支払った報酬で、バイクのタイヤ交換、バッテリーの装備、それにウィンカーやヘッドランプを修理しろと伝えた。領収書には、叔父さんのサインが書かれてある。事務書類だけど、思い出の記録でもある。

Fieldwork requires legs that can move around in a limited amount of time. In the Philippines, NIKKA's uncle was a tricycle driver.
In that case, I requested, "I want to do fieldwork on Bracan with a tricycle." Then it was easily decided, "What time will you come tomorrow?"
I ran around the farm road of Brakan every day with my uncle's tricycle. My uncle knew Bracan very well and knew what I wanted to shoot. So he was the best driver for fieldwork work.
Of course I paid 1,000piso / day because it was my job. The tricycle in the city had an experience of 200piso in 10 minutes. Then my uncle's tricycle, which guided me to two hours of fieldwork, was too cheap. He later made it 1,500 piso. He told me that with the rewards I paid, he should change the tires on the bike, equip the batteries, and repair the turn signals and headlamps. The receipt has the signature of my uncle. It's an office document, but it's also a record of memories.
