NIKKAが買い物があるという。ならば夕方涼しくなった頃にバラグタスのマーケットにゆく事にした。フィリピンの昼間は、暑くて外を出歩く気分ではない。
夕方叔父さんのトライシクルで市場へ出かけた。あの異臭が漂う市場だ。脇の階段を上がると二階は総合物販店だったのは意外だった。ダイソーと衣料品のシマムラを抱き合わせにしたような店だ。
傑作だったのは格安スニーカーだ。なにしろプラスチックでヒモの部分まで成形されている。なにもそこまでしなくても良いのに。はてどこからこんなアイディが登場したのだろうか。探せばもっと珍奇な商品もありそうだ。
買い物の帰りは、雑踏を抜けて角のチョーキングでディナーだ。ここでは最高のディナーかもしれない。チョーキングは、私がフィリピンを3年前に訪れたときには、メニューが豊富でお粥まであったのだ。しかし、いまは少しがっかりさせられる。その先にはマクドナルドの看板が見える。昨日食べたが。
ファーストフードに共通しているのは、大きなチキンとご飯のセットメニューだ。そんんなのは、日本ではまずあり得ない。フィリピンでは米食中心なのだ。
