▼図書館で借りた水木しげる著『水木しげるのラバウル戦記』（筑摩書房、1994年7月刊行）を読み、抜き書きも終わったまさにその時、11月30日、多臓器不全で93歳の生涯を閉じられました。心からご冥福をお祈りします。【合掌】▼そこで、水木しげるさんの追悼をかねて、タバコの登場するシーンを中心にした抜き書きですが、数回にわたり、投稿させていただきます。
【30～31ページ】
「コーカン」と言うので、何のことかと思ったら「交換」のことだ。煙草1本でパパイヤ1個というのが交換基準だった。----子供（少年）でも煙草を吸い、椰子の葉でつくったバッグを持っていた。バッグの中はカナカウイスキーと称する檳榔樹の実とカバと称するサンゴの粉末などが入っていた。たまに気のきいた土人は煙草のバイブを入れていた。
その頃のぼくは、たしか満20歳位だったと思うが、煙草を吸わなかったから、煙草はいくらでも持っていた。
煙草を10本位やると、いろいろな果物を持ってきて料理してくれる。そのしぐさが素朴で面白く、英語の単語で通じた。
On 30 November, just as he finished reading and excerpting from the book Shigeru Mizuki's Rabaul War Diary (Chikuma Shobo, published in July 1994), which he had borrowed from the library, he passed away at the age of 93 from multiple organ failure. We pray for his soulful rest in peace. [Gassho].
In remembrance of Shigeru Mizuki, I would like to post a few excerpts, focusing on scenes in which cigarettes appear.

You say 'kokan' and I wonder what you mean by 'exchange'. The standard of exchange was one cigarette for one papaya. ---- Even children (boys) smoked cigarettes and carried bags made of palm leaves. The bag contained betel nut called Kanaka whisky and coral powder called kava, among other things. Occasionally, a witty native would put a cigarette vibrator in it.
I was about 20 years old at the time, I think, and I didn't smoke, so I had plenty of cigarettes.
If I gave him about ten cigarettes, he would bring me various fruits and cook them for me. The gesture was simple and funny, and the English words were understood.
