I have a number of both internal and external mentees. I call them "my mentees," but they are my lovely colleagues and friends. I received several emails from them over this long weekend. One was in Singapore and did great job there. He is leaving for Houston next for further clinical observership in the United States at my Alma Mater. I look forward to hearing from him.
The other mentee, who I just met in Hokkaido, sent me email saying that he is interested in better clinical training. I talked to him after my lecture and I was able to "sense" how good he is as a clinician. It is my mission and top priority to support those who are highly motivated and seek professional advice from me. I believe he will be one of my great colleagues and friends through professional exchanges.
I also have several medical student mentees. I have been encouraging them to go abroad and see what is happening outside Japan.
One of my great mentors clearly told me that his mentee's success is his success. This "educational norm" or "mentality" would promote very good "mentor-mentee" relationships and warrant "win-win" mutual success.
My role at present is very valuable since I have been playing a role both as mentor and mentee at the same time. I have been trying hard to make the best of these opportunities. People learn most through teaching. This learning theory is very true on the basis of my own experience.
