a head of cabbage

"Japan TImes Weekly"１２月１７日号に載っていたクイズです。

こういうの大好きなのでちょっと長いけどそのまま紹介します。
"A man owns a wolf, a goat and a head of cabbage. He must cross a river in a small river in a small boat that can carry him and only one of his possessions at a time. If he takes the wolf and leaves the goat and the cabbage, the goat will eat the cabbage. If he takes the cabbage and leaves the wolf and goat, the wolf will eat the goat. The same routine can happen on the other side of the river. How can he bring all three items safely across?

さあ、考えましょう。その間に単語の勉強。
キャベツは"a head of cabbage"と数えるんですすね。
前に料理のレシピでとうもろこしは１本２本という時に"ear"を使うというのを覚えました。
とうもろこし４本なら"four ears of corns"となります。

鉛筆１本、紙１枚、馬１頭、金魚１匹、車１台、日本語の品詞はいくらでも思いつきますが、英語にも似たようなものはあったんですね。

さて、答は。

"On his first tirp across the river, he takes the goat. On his second trip, he takes the wolf and on his return trip, he takes the goat. on his third trip, he takes the cabbage. On his fourth and final trip, he takes the goat again."
