Teaches Joshua the no-win game of Tic Tac Toe and, in the process, averts global thermonuclear war.

The movie "WarGames" released in 1983 features a high school student who loves hacking, played by Matthew Broderick. The protagonist, who broke into a computer at a game development company, correctly guessed the password for the backdoor of the system from the name of his son, who died by the program developer. That is "Joshua". However, the intrusion destination was not the computer of the game company, but the nuclear war simulator "WOPR" of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The protagonist, who intended to start a game of full-scale nuclear war, is about to start a real World War III.

Unlike in the movie, where it's just "joshua", the book version uses "joshua5" (because Falken's son died at age 5). It makes the password slightly harder, but we'd still recommend going with something not so guessable.

 

The U.S. response to the Russia-Ukraine crisis

Russia's unprovoked assault on Ukraine has faced universal condemnation from Western powers. Sanctions against Russia and aid to Ukraine have come from many directions. But putting troops on the ground in Ukraine, which is not a member of NATO, is a line that the US and other Western allies have not been willing to cross.

Then China’s attempt to take Taiwan by force is unpredictable, with China apparently learning from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 
Taiwan and mainland China have been separately governed since they split as a result of a civil war in 1949. Beijing regards democratic Taiwan as a breakaway province and has vowed to unify it with the mainland, by force if necessary. Chinese pressure on Taiwan has increased in recenly, most visibly in its military flights into Taiwan's air-defense identification zone, a self-declared area that is not territorial airspace.

Ddeterrence posture in the Pacific puts a very different perspective on all of this. We closely watch US actions toward Russia, Ukraine.

I met him 10 years ago. It was at the Venetian carnival. 
I don't really like meeting Japanese people while traveling abroad. I prefer to be a friend with local people than Japanese traveler. However, he is one of the most memorable Japanese people I met while traveling.

Ukrainian woman confronts armed Russian soldier - BBC News

More civilians killed as Russian forces continue attacks on Ukrainian cities. Russia escalates and tries to show that no part of Ukraine is safe. 
The West has congratulated itself for the sanctions imposed on Moscow but these countries' leaders are also scratching their heads what will their actions accomplish and what exactly is Vladimir Putin's endgame in Ukraine. 

People in Ukraine are dying, including children, and many thousands of lives are at risk. Take action to demand that the Russian authorities stop this act of aggression and protect civilians now.  
What can we do to stop Russia? 

We must remind that the fanatics alone cannot run a human society. Humans inherently have diverse values and do not obey the orders of a handful of fanatics. Dictators always make mistakes because no one criticizes or disobeys the order. 

The pen is mightier than the sword. If there is no one to obey Putin, that's the end. Urge the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and demand that Russia ends the aggression immediately, protects civilians and respects international law.
