Minister Gemba, distinguished guests, Directors and colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,
Let me begin with my appreciation to your kind gift of beautiful flowers. Thank you very much!
It is my great pleasure and honor to have a chance to speak on behalf of our outgoing fellows at this retirement banquet.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ministry for its great support during our employment especially for the intensive language training and the appropriate job rotations.
As the ministry expected me to be an expert on Korean affairs, I was given 2 years' language training in Korea.
So I could learn every aspect of the country including society and culture through living and studying there.
Among many Korean customs, one thing I still keep is to use both hands when I exchange gifts or shake hands.
Because Koreans think it rude to give or receive something with one hand.
Let me show you. I pour beer into your tankard with both hands like this. I present a gift in the same way like this.
This is one of the important body languages for the foreign diplomats in Korea to practice at first as I did.
The ministry also let us rotate a job normally in every 3 years so that we could have a lot of opportunities to know more about the other countries and to develop ourselves. Thanks to this rotation policy, I was able to make official trips representing Japan to more than 30 countries mainly when I was engaged in the technical cooperation scheme. This is the column on a monthly magazine called "World Current" in which I talked about environmental problems in Mexico answering an interview. I was encouraged to do my job by this column when I found my name and photo on the magazine.
In spite of such a warm support, I am sorry to say that I have not succeeded in being an excellent diplomat due to lack of my communication skills and strong will.
But I would be very happy to be remembered just as A Competent Diplomat.
Graduating from the 39 years' work at the ministry, I have decided to go on a new way with the Toastmasters and will be an Advanced Communicator Diamond, above the Gold level, at the next stage of my life as a target.
Thank you again and good bye.
Congratulations!
