でも、これで大丈夫でしょうか。制限時間は、3分30秒以内です。

I will introduce a book for tonight in English for the first time at this Club.
The book I want you to read is titled ‘Blink’ written by Malcolm Gladwell(Back Pay Books, Printed in the U.S.A.).

Gladwell is a writer for a famous magazine in the US called “the New Yoker”. But he is even more famous for three books he has written in recent years. All his books and most of his articles focus on about the social science and sociology. He refers to a lot of academic research but he usually concentrate on the unusual or unexpected implications of the research.

Tonight I have chosen his second book published in 2005 because it is the cheapest and looks like easy to read. It is titled blink. The word to blink means to close and open your eyes very quickly. He is talking about the power of thinking without thinking in other words you can usually make a very quick, the first 2 seconds, decision about things you know very well.

In one of the examples in his book he talks about a piece of art where many experts were asked to analyze this piece of art and decide whether it was a fake. This actually was an example that was taken from the Getty Museum in Los Angels. They bought a marble statue dating from the sixth century BC and many people wondered whether it was really a piece of ancient art or whether it was a fake someone who had made it look like a piece of ancient art. So what they did is they did a lot of tests and studies on it for 14 months. And they decided that it was an original piece of art. The Museum then spent a lot of money to buy this piece of art. But then the other experts came and had just one quick look they said that it was a fake. That’s because again they already have a lot of knowledge and expertise they could tell very quickly that this was not a real piece of art.

There are many times when people make decisions they can’t tell you exactly why they think that is true. In other words, they are able to see things and understand things without necessarily analyze them and that what Gladwell was talking here.

I enjoyed reading this book because Gladwell is a very clear writer and interesting storyteller. It is English that is not too advanced. I think you would enjoy the subject of book.

Many people read his books in fact time magazine, a popular news magazine, said he was one of the hundred most influential people in the world
