Distinguished guests, fellow Rotarians,
I guess many of our members have studied abroad or may have plans to do so. In my case, I have studied at a university in Korea on government scholarship for 2 years. By this experience, I could understand about Korea and Korean people more deeply than ever.
Japan also attracts a lot of foreign students to come and study. A latest statistic shows that there are more than 140 thousand international students in Japan. Many of them win scholarships offered by national governments or private foundations.

Fellow Rotarians,
Serving as a chairman for the Yoneyama Scholarship Committee of our club, I would like to explain briefly about the Yoneyama Project in 3 special features .

First, It has a long History. Tokyo Rotary Club founded it in 1952, nearly 60 years ago, in memory of Rotarian Umekichi Yoneyama for his great dedication to Rotary. It has contributed through the awarded students to appeal peaceful aspects of Japan after the world war two.

Second, it is the largest private foundation of this kind in Japan. It offers scholarship to 800 foreign students a year and has benefited more than 16 thousand from 120 countries.

Last but not least, Rotary’s hospitality welcomes the students. They are given not only financial assistance but also friendly follow up by designated Rotarian counsellors.

Fellow Rotarians,
Now I must point out the financial problem of the project. For the last one year period we collected about 1.3 billion yen, 110 million less than the target.
We should change this embarrassing situation, no more deficit this year again. Keep 800 foreign students happy.

Fellow Rotarians,
To conclude my speech, I am pleased to propose a new fund raising project which all the members can enjoy donation to this meaningful Yoneyama Project more easily and more happily. Please look at a handout distributed on your table. I would appreciate it if you could read it later and do action,
Wail the talk.

Toastmaster!

Now I am ready to entertain your questions and comments. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Why did you join Rotary Club?
What are reasons for the Yoneyama Project to get worse financially?
