たばこの気持ち

先日、古書店で買った老川芳明著「熱血『ワンマン』宰相」（1800円＋税）、株式会社生活情報センター、2007年1月10日発行を読みました

その中に、今に通じる吉田茂の願いが分かる文章がありましたので、以下、引用させていただきます

併し私は決して失望していない。人間というものは進歩するのであって、将来は今よりも立派な人間が出て来ることを私は信じる。

昔の人間はよかった、今の人間は駄目だ、などとは絶対に言えない。だから、失望はしないが、ただ今の段階では思うように行かないのが事実である。

これを思う通りにしたいと思っても、直ぐに効き目のある薬などはない。気長に民衆にデモクラシーの本当の意味を体得させるように教育するより他はない。

学校の教育、又、社会的の教育によって、その目的を達するように、政治家も民間の識者も努力しなければならない。

然るに残念ながら政府の方は、そうした意欲を失わせるようなことばかりしている。それは目先に重大な事件が後から後から起って、それに翻弄されるからでもあるが、日本の現状では何事でも壁にぶつかってしまう。

この壁を突き破る為には、国民的な一つのムーヴメントが興らなければならない。

The other day, I bought a book at a used bookstore, "The Passionate 'One-Man' Prime Minister" by Yoshiaki Oikawa (1800 yen + tax), published by Lifestyle Information Center Co., Ltd. on January 10, 2007.

In it, I found a passage that conveyed Shigeru Yoshida's wishes that are still relevant today, so I will quote it below.

However, I am not disappointed at all. 

Human beings progress, and I believe that in the future, better people than now will appear.

You can never say that people in the past were good and people today are no good.

So, I am not disappointed, but the fact is that at this stage, things are not going as we want them to.

Even if you want to make things the way you want them to, there is no medicine that will work right away. 

There is no other way than to patiently educate the people so that they can understand the true meaning of democracy.

Politicians and private experts must make an effort to achieve this goal through education in schools and in society.

However, unfortunately, the government is only doing things that discourage such enthusiasm. This is partly because major incidents keep occurring one after another, and we are at the mercy of them, but in Japan's current situation, everything we do hits a wall.

In order to break through this wall, a national movement must be created.
