KNOWLEDGEABLE, KNOWLEDGEABLY

　英語を話したり書いたりするうえで重要なことのひとつに、「同じ表現を使うことを避ける」ということがある。avoid repetitionだ。
　なので、必要に応じて同義語(synonym)を使うことも大事だが、それぞれの語の派生語を使う、すなわち品詞を変えて使ってみるということも大切だ。
　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの問題をknowを使って考えてみよう。

「……をよく知っている」というのであれば、

○Practical Example
　Muneyuki knows everything about Marvel and Avengers.
「統之はマーベルとアベンジャーズのことは何でも知っている」

と言えばいいだろう。だが、形容詞knowledgeable（知識［知力］のある、…に精通している）を使って、次のようにも言える。

◎Extra Example
　Muneyuki's very knowledgeable about Marvel and Avengers. 
「統之はマーベルとアベンジャーズにとても詳しい」

　そして副詞knowledgeablyがあるのだが、これを使うのはなかなかむずかしいし、辞書にも副詞は追加見出しとして処理されていて、用例が示されていることはないのだが（ただ、信頼できる研究社『ライトハウス英和辞典』には「博識ぶりを発揮して」という語彙定義があって感動した）、Oxford English Dictionaryを見れば、次のような用例が確認できる。

2001   Underground Wine Jrnl. Sept. 16/2   The viewer is bombarded with specific wine words flashed across the screen as Silverstone knowledgeably provides the definition.

よって、ここから状況も言い方は変わってしまうが、次のように言えるだろう。

　Mueyuki speaks so knowledgably about Marvel and Avengers every day to Makiko and their son.
「統之はマーベルとアベンジャーズについて真希子と息子に毎日ほんとにいろんなことを話す」

　副詞の使い方はむずかしいが、それを使いこなすことで、会話や英文ライティングの幅も広がるし、ここに述べたような違いを意識すれば、英和翻訳にもつなげられると思う。

KEEP IN, KEEP SOMEBODY IN

　今日から9月ですね。

　2019年もあと4か月……。

　keep somebody inで、「（人）を（病院などに）入れておく，入院させておく」

　The doctor kept me in the hospital another night for observation.

「医者は様子を見るため、わたしをもう一晩入院させておいた」

Kirk Kerkorian

　The Gambler: How Penniless Dropout Kirk Kerkorian Became the Greatest Deal Maker in Capitalist Historyを今読んでいるが、実に面白い。

アメリカでもっとも著名な大富豪のひとりであるが、ほとんどその存在を知られることのなかった実業界の大物Kirk Kerkorianの生涯をつづった1冊である。

　本日のGetUpEnglishはその一部をご紹介する。

○Practical Example

Back in July, a gossip item in Parade Magazine suggested that Kirk was seeing actress Claudine Longet, the ex-wife of singer Andy Williams. Kirk’s lawyer Greg Bautzer and actor Ryan O’Neal were also mentioned as recent companions of Ms. Longet. One Sunday morning a more prominent and suggestive piece appeared in Parade Magazine—in Walter Scott’s popular Q & A column “Personality Parade”—asking the very snarky question: When would Kirk Kerkorian be “trading in Mrs. Kerkorian for actress Yvette Mimieux?”1

　６月、『パレード』誌のゴシップ欄に、歌手のアンディ ウィリアムズの元妻で女優のクロディーヌ・ロンジェと会っていると書き立てられた。近いところではカークの顧問弁護士グレッグ・バウツァーと俳優のライアン・オニールもロンジェと一緒だったという。ある日曜の朝、さらに目を引くきわどい記事が同誌に掲載された。有名人の ゴシップ記事で人気のQ & Aコラム「ウォルター・スコット・パーソナリティ・パレード」に、とても意地の悪い質問が出されたのだ。「カーク・カーコリアンは自分の奥さんから女優のイヴェット・ミミューに乗り換えるのだろう？」

  1970年代がどれだけスリリングなじだいであったかわかる。

Photos of Kirk in his trademark pompadour-styled dark hair and the blond Yvette in a sultry publicity pose were published side by side with the nondenial answer: “Mr. Kerkorian and Miss Mimieux are friends and do not engage in trades of that type.”

　トレードマークの黒髪のオールバックのカーコリアンと、官能的なポーズで注目を引くブロンドのイヴェットの写真が何枚も掲載され、脇に誰も納得しない答えが記されていた。「カーコリアン氏とミミュー嬢は友人であり、その種の関係には発展しない」

  英語は読みやすいが、翻訳のするにあたっては、読者に読んでもらう工夫が必要だ。

Kirk was the married fifty-four-year-old multimillionaire; the actress—who had starred a decade earlier in the films Where the Boys Are and Time Machine—was single and twenty-nine. Friends say they met in New York City, that romance led to talk of marriage, but that Kirk honored Jean’s pleas not to divorce.2

　カーコリアンは54歳の既婚の大富豪。女優は10年ほど前に『ボーイハント』『タイム・マシン／80万年後の世界へ』などの映画で主役を張った29歳の独身女性。複数の友人によると、ふたりはニューヨークで知り合い、結婚を語るまでのロマンスに進展したが、カークは妻ジーンの別れたくないという願いを受け入れたのだ。

  英語も翻訳もどれだけつづけていてもゴールは見えないし、だからこそこんなに長くつづけられるのだ。

 

KAMI

　日本の（神道の）神は英語にもなっている。kamiの形で複数形で使われる。

　現在、鋭意ゲラ校正中で索引作成中の『若い読者のための宗教史』に次の表現があった。

Not only was Japan created by the gods, it was their chosen abode, their dwelling-place. Other religions believed that though gods could visit the earth, their main residence was far above us in a special domain called heaven. For the Japanese their beautiful island nation was that special domain. Heaven and earth were one. Heaven was on earth, earth was in heaven. Some religions saw a human body as the physical dwelling place of an immortal soul. That’s how the Japanese thought of their land. Japan’s islands were the material expression of sacred spirits called kami who were everywhere in nature. They dwelt in animals. They inhabited Japan’s mountains, the most beautiful and sacred being Mount Fuji. They were found in plants and rivers.

　日本は神々によって造られただけでなく、神々の住居、住むところとして選ばれた。ほかの宗教では神が地上に訪れることはあっても、神のおもな住居は天国と呼ばれる、はるか頭上の特別な領域だと信じられている。日本人にとっては、自分たちの美しい島国が特別な領域だった。天国と地上がひとつなのだ。天国が地上にあり、地上が天国にある。人体を不死の魂の宿る物理的場所と見なす宗教もあるが、日本人は自分たちの国を神の宿る場所と考えた。日本の島々は、「神」と呼ぶ聖なる霊が物理的に現れたものなのだ。神は自然のなかのあらゆる場所に宿っていた。動物のなかにも宿っていた。日本の山々、もっとも美しく聖なる山である富士山にも、草木や川にも神が宿っていた。

　kamiはすべて代名詞はtheyで受けていることにご注意。

　ご覧のように、英語はすっと読ませるし、このように美しい描写もたくさんある。訳文も同じようにひっかかることなく読んでいだけるものにしたいし、その繊細さや美しさも等価で伝えられたらと思う。

TIE THE KNOT

  tie the knot withで、「結婚する、婚約する」。

　knotは「（ひもなどの）結び目」。そこから転じて「きずな、縁」の意味を持ち、tie the knot withで「縁を結ぶ→結婚する」の意味で使われる。

　After months of speculations, Britain’s royal family announced that American actress and model Meghan Markle would tie the knot with Prince Harry.

  「噂が数か月か流れましたが、イギリス王室はアメリカ人女優でモデルのメーガン・マークルさんとハリー王子の婚約を発表しました」

  次のような言い方もする。

KICK-ASS

　kick-assは「荒っぽい、パワフルな、元気のある」であるが、状況によっては「最高の」という意味でも使われる。

そのゴールは最高だった！

  航海中のGuardians of the Galaxy Vol.2にこの言い方があった。もちろんRocketは皮肉を込めて使っている。

  Sorry, I'm so sorry, I just keep imagining you waking up in the morning, looking in the mirror and in all seriousness to yourself saying 'You know what would be a really kick-ass name? Taserface!'

 「ごめん、まじでごめん。おまえが朝起きて鏡を見てまじめな顔で『どうだ、かっこいいだろう、テイザーフェイスだ』なんて言っているところを想像しちまったんだ」

 

 

EARN ONE’S KEEP

　earn one's keepで、「自分の食い扶持を稼ぐ、かかる費用に見合う仕事をする」。

  "Mrs. Sakamoto is one of the best assets in our company. She more than earns her keep."

「坂本さんはわが社の財産というべき有能な社員の一人だ。給料以上の働きをする」

KISS UP TO

  kiss up toは「…にとりいる」

  "She was totally kissing up to him."

FIT FOR A KING

   fit for a kingは「（王侯にもふさわしいほど）豪奢な、とびきりの」。

  「５年ぶりに平野家を訪ねたら、山海の珍味でもてなしてくれた。

KNEE-JERK

  knee-jerkで「（反応などが）反射的な、（意見などが）型にはまった、画一的な（行動などが）予知できる」。

　「元市長は急進的な新提案に対する保守派の反射的な反応を示していた」

　"There has been a blanket ban on germ-line therapy, so there needs to be a debate about that and some rational thought rather than knee-jerk reactions that, 'No you can't possibly do that.'"

　「生殖細胞系療法は全面禁止されているから、それについての論議が必要であり、『いや、それはしてはいけない』という反射的に反応するのではなく、少し論理的な考えについて話しあう必要がある」

　a blanket ban は、「全面禁止」。

 

 

KNOCK TOGETHER

  knock togetherはいろいろな意味で使われるが、「…を間に合わせで作る」の意味でもよく用いられる。

  "Kumi was busy all day today for her translation job and didn’t have time to cook dinner."

  "So, she knocked together a quick meal from the leftovers in the fridge."

  食事以外のものにも使われる。

KEEP AFTER

  　keep afterは、「（人に…するように）うるさく言う」。

KEEP OUT OF…

　keep out of… で、「（寒さ・面倒などを）避ける［避けさせる］」。

ON HIS KNEES

  　「土下座する」は英語でなんというか？

　"However, Hanzawa never forgives him." 

　「浅野支店長は、土下座して謝った」

KNOWINGLY

　副詞knowinglyは、「承知のうえで、故意に」。
