7月4日は、イギリスからのアメリカ独立を祝う、アメリカで最も重要な国の祝日だ。1776年7月4日、アメリカ建国の始祖達が、13の植民地は、もはや植民地ではなく、「イギリス人の権利」が、ジョージ3世の行政官達のみならず、あらゆる国民に適用される独立国家だと宣言した。(実際、第二次アメリカ大陸議会は、7月2日に独立決議案を可決しており、歴史学者達は、独立宣言が、7月4日、8月2日のどちらに署名されたのか論争している。)

こうした戦争や軍事作戦のどれ一つとして、外国の脅威からアメリカ国民を守ることとは何の関係もなかった。
日本やドイツさえ、アメリカにとっては脅威ではなかった。どちらの国もアメリカを侵略する可能性もなく、どちらの国にも、そのような戦争計画は無かった。
日本が、中国、ビルマとインドネシアを征服したと仮定しよう。それ程広大な領土を支配すれば、日本は、アメリカを侵略する為、一師団とて割くことは不可能で、もちろん、いかなる攻撃艦隊も決して太平洋を渡ることはできなかったろう。ミッドウェーにおける日本艦隊の運命同様、攻撃艦隊はアメリカ海軍にとって格好の標的だったろう。
ドイツが、ヨーロッパのイギリス、ロシアから、北アフリカまで、征服を拡張していたと仮定しよう。ドイツは、それほど広大な領土をうまく占領することは不可能で、アメリカを侵略するための一兵卒すら割くことはできなかったろう。超大国アメリカでさえ、相対的に、領土も狭く、人口の少ない国々である、イラクとアフガニスタンを上手く占領することはできなかった。

7月4日、軍楽隊と行進を見て、軍国主義のたわ言を聞かれる際には、ご自分に起こりうる運命をお忘れなきよう。
