Sir Jonathan Ive, Senior Vice President of Design at Apple Inc. and arguably the most influential industrial designer around today appears in conversation with Design Museum Director, Deyan Sudjic, in an evening devoted to the future of design. A really great evening, as I have grown to expect at the Design Museum!
I want to share some of his quotes…
About user experience
Why is it when we have a bad experience with a product, we assume it is us (the user), but a bad experience with food, we blame the food?!
About value
What we make testifies who we are. People can sense care and can sense carelessness. This relates to respect for each other and carelessness is personally offensive.
About design
Make each product the best it can be. Focus on form and materials.
What we don’t include is as important as what we do include.
About ideas and creativity
The best ideas start as conversations.
A small change at the beginning of the design process defines an entirely different product at the end.
At the start of the process the idea is just a thought- very fragile and exclusive. When the first physical manifestation is created everything changes. It is no longer exclusive, now it involves a lot of people.
To do something innovative means that you reject reason.
About motivation at Apple
There is a clear goal and it isn’t to make money. The goal is to desperately try to make the best products we can. We are not naive – if you trust it, people like it, they buy it and we make money. This is a consequence.
About education
It is sad that so many designers don’t know how to make. CAD software can make a bad design look palatable! It is sad that four years can be spent on a 3D design course without making anything! People who are great at designing and making have a great advantage.
About failing
Shouldn’t be afraid to fail- if we are not failing we are not pushing.
80% in the studio is not going to work.
If something is not good enough, stop doing it.
About design theft
Eight years of work can be copied in six months. It wasn’t inevitable that it was going to work. A stolen design is stolen time.
Is it flattering?… No
Creating new and different designs
We wont be different for different’s sake. Different is easy… make it pink and fluffy!! Better is harder. Making something different often has a marketing and corporate agenda.
When big things change (like displays go away or voice control takes over) make it different.
About challenges in software design
Design is design. The media is different and there is a lot to learn but the design principles are always relevant.

Learn how to focus
Be prepared to screw up and throw things away
For me personally, I need to figure out how to fail more and earlier in a corporate environment. The focus in the corporate world is on delivery and success and limiting risk. Failing in any way in the corporate world is not generally welcomed.
Jonathan talks about failing 80% of the time and embracing this so that the 20% success really is success. Fail early to de-risk early on and care for the 20% to create a wonderful product.

If i’m reading his quote correctly, Jony is not saying to fail 80% of the time. He means 80% effort in studio is not enough. that extra 20% could mean failing to deliver what’s expected in the search for a good design. Which lead’s to his rejection of mediocre design, i.e. <80% designs.

About the 80% failure- Jony talked about idea generation. A load of ideas are initially generated. As time goes on, some of these ideas are rejected and others refined. Some ideas are ahead of their time and cannot progress any further. Out of all the ideas only 20% of them get all the way through to a final product. In oder to create a wonderful product, many ideas are cut down to create a winner.

アップルの天才デザイナー、大いに語る。
今やアップルのデザイン部門を率い、圧倒的な影響力をもつジョナサン・アイブ。その知名度の割には普段公に出てこないため彼が何を考えているのか、知る機会は多くありません。そんな彼が先日ロンドンのデザインミュージアムでデザイナーを対象にトークショーを行い、未来のデザインについて話しました。
彼いわく、デザイナーにとって重要なことは、
どう心を込めるか学ぶこと
どう集中するか学ぶこと
失敗とやめることを恐れないこと
の3つだそうです。
まずはじめの「心の込めかた」についてですが、ジョナサン・アイブは自分の作っているものに十分に心を込めないと失礼だと言っています。
僕達が作るものは僕達が何者かをはっきりと示すんだ。人は心が込もっているか感じることができるし、込もっていない場合もそうだからね。これはお互いの信頼に関わるし、心を込めないことは失礼になる。
2つ目の「集中」について、ベストを尽くす重要性を語っています。
それぞれの作品を出来る限りベストに作りなさい。そして形と材料に集中しなさい。そのプロダクトに込めなかったものは込めたものと同じぐらい大切なんだ。 デザインをするうえで明確な目標はあるけど、それはお金を稼ぐことじゃない。それはできるかぎり最高のプロダクトを必死になって作ろうとすること。人がその製品を信じて、気に入って、買うことで、お金をもらう。これは結果であって目標じゃない。
アップル製品の際立つシンプルさもここから来るんでしょうか。
そして最後の「失敗」については、彼は以下のように語っています。
失敗を恐れてはいけないよ。失敗しないと成長しないからね。80%の作品はうまくいかない。もし作るものが十分よいものでなかったら、やめないといけない。
ジョナサン・アイブほどのデザイナーでもたくさん失敗してきたからこそ今の彼があるのでしょう。
この講演会では他にも彼はいろいろ語っていて、詳しくはUXデザイナーのShafferyさんのブログに載っています。まだまだ知らないことも多いけど、ジョナサン・アイブの考え方が少しずつわかってきた気がします。今後のアップルにもワクワクが止まりません。

Japan’s prime minister has called a snap election for next month in a bold attempt to shore up support for his decision to postpone an unpopular tax rise and breathe life into his “Abenomics” growth strategy.
Shinzo Abe told a televised news conference on Tuesday that he would dissolve the lower house of parliament on Friday to pave the way for an election on 14 December. He added that he would delay a rise in the consumption [sales] tax, from 8% to 10%, until April 2017, 18 months later than planned.
Abe’s move came a day after quarterly GDP figures showed Japan had slipped back into recession for the first time since 2012. The economy shrank by an annualised 1.6% in July to September after plunging 7.3% in the second quarter.
A rise in the same tax this April – the first in 17 years – from 5% to 8%, has been widely blamed for hammering consumer spending, the driver of 60% of the world’s third-biggest economy.
“I’ve listened to lots of opinions … and taking those into account, and to ensure that Abenomics will succeed, I decided today to postpone the consumption tax hike by 18 months to April 2017,” Abe said.
He added that the “three arrows” of Abenomics were having the desired effect, citing rises in employment and corporate revenues. But he said wages and consumption, two key indicators that have largely remained flat, “should” increase in time.
Abe said Monday’s GDP figures meant a two percentage point rise in the sales tax next October would weigh heavily on consumer spending and jeopardise attempts to stave off deflation.
The GDP data was an unexpected setback for Abe’s three-pronged economic programme, which combines massive government spending with cheap credit and structural reforms. In echoes of the former UK prime minister Lady Thatcher, his political hero, Abe said there was “no alternative” to his growth-led strategy.
Many analysts had predicted the economy would grow by just over 2% between July and September; economists still believe there will be a rebound, but that it was unlikely to come until early next year.
Asked why he had decided to call an election just two years into his four-year term, Abe said: “I have had to make a critical decision so I feel I must seek an immediate mandate from the public. I will ask voters to deliver their judgment.”
Abe had agreed to a two-stage increase in the VAT-like tax while in opposition to address growing concern over Japan’s public debt, the largest among developed nations. Some of the extra revenue the tax rise would create is desperately needed to pay soaring health and social security costs created by the country’s rapidly greying population.
By putting off a second tax increase – from 8% to 10% – scheduled for October 2015, Abe has defied fiscal hawks in his ruling Liberal Democratic party (LDP).
Confronted with the bleak GDP data, Abe said he had opted instead to concentrate on boosting growth and beating deflation after more than two decades of stagnation and low spending.
To underline his priorities, and as a sweetener for voters, he is also poised to announce a fresh stimulus package, reportedly worth \2tn to \3tn.
“The GDP figures for July to September turned out to be not so encouraging,” Abe said. “We are seizing a chance to exit long-lasting deflation and we cannot miss that chance. We will stay the course in restoring our fiscal health and regain the trust of the international community.”
He denied speculation that the tax rise would be postponed a second time. “We will continue to move the economy forward to give us the right environment to go ahead with the sales tax rise,” he said.
While Abe is certain to find support for the tax delay among cash-strapped voters, he has yet to convince fiscal hawks in his party that Japan’s debt crisis can be set aside.
Anything other than a resounding victory could encourage those seeking to replace him when the LDP holds regular leadership elections next September, said Tobias Harris, a Japan analyst at Teneo Intelligence. “While Abe will win support for his decision to postpone the second tax hike, he will have to answer for the recession that has now occurred under his watch as well as for the broader failures of Abenomics to raise household incomes,” he said.
“Anything more than a marginal reduction in the coalition’s seat share will be a personal defeat for Abe – even more so if the ruling coalition loses enough seats to be deprived of its super-majority.”
Harris added that any significant reduction in seats could undermine Abe’s premiership and raise the likelihood that he would face a challenger in the LDP’s leadership election.

しかし、ジェイムズさんは「今年は本を2冊書くぞ」などといった目的を設定してはいませんでしたし、何かの基準に沿ってカウントしつづけてきたわけでもありませんでした。唯一決めていたルールは「毎週月曜と木曜日に記事を1本書き上げる」ということだけでした。そのルールをひたすら守ることを心がけているうちに、いつの間にかワード数は11万5000に達していたのです。仕事の目標とプロセスに集中していたら、結果として同じ、もしくはそれ以上の結果をあげていました。
◆1：目的だけでなく、その過程に力を注ぐ
目的に向かって努力しているということは、裏を返せば「今はまだ十分じゃないけど、目的に到達する時には十分になる」という意味と取ることができます。この考え方では、常に「目的に達するまでは喜びを得ることができない、成功したことにならない」と自分に暗示をかけていることになります。

ある日、ジェイムズさんがジムでウェイトリフティングのトレーニングをしていたときのこと。トレーニングも終盤に差し掛かろうとしていたときに、足に少し痛みを感じました。大したものではなかったので、そのまま最後のセットに入るつもりだったのですが、ふと「私はこれを一生にわたって続けようと思っているんだ」と思い出したことがきっかけで、その日はトレーニングを終了することにしました。このとき、目的ばかりを重視する考え方だったら、途中で中止せずに最後までやり通してしまい、途中で中止することは「失敗」だと考えたかもしれません。しかし、目標を重視する見方に立てば、それは大きな問題にはなりません。目標では特定の数値ではなく、過程に沿って物事をすすめることが重要です。
無理をして体を壊してしまえば、本末転倒ということにもなりかねません。「目標は目的よりも価値がある」とするのはこのためです。目標は長期の視線に根ざしたものであり、かならずベストの結果を残すことになります。

Das japanische Erziehungsministerium hat die maximale Strahlendosis, der Kinder in Schule und Kindergarten ausgesetzt sein dürfen, auf 3,8 Mikrosievert pro Stunde festgesetzt. Auf das Jahr hochgerechnet kann sich dies, wie der SPIEGEL in seiner aktuellen Ausgabe berichtet, bei acht Stunden Aufenthalt pro Tag im Freien auf rund 20 Millisievert aufsummieren – die Höchstdosis für einen deutschen Atomkraftwerksmitarbeiter. "Das ist viel zu viel", sagt Shaun Burnie, der als unabhängiger Experte für Greenpeace arbeitet. "Kinder sind doch viel strahlenempfindlicher als Erwachsene." Edmund Lengfelder vom Otto Hug Strahleninstitut ist empört: "Man nimmt damit ganz bewusst zusätzliche Krebsfälle in Kauf. Durch den Grenzwert ist die Regierung juristisch aus dem Schneider – moralisch aber nicht." Obwohl 20 Millisievert pro Jahr im unteren Ermessensbereich der Empfehlungen der Internationalen Strahlenschutzkommission für Strahlenunfälle lägen, sagt Peter Jacob, Leiter des Instituts für Strahlenschutz am Helmholtz Zentrum München, sei dies das erste Mal, dass er wirklich ein Problem mit einer Maßnahme der japanischen Regierung habe: "Bei der hohen Strahlensensitivität von Kindern sollte man einen Wert von 20 Millisievert möglichst vermeiden." Viele japanische Eltern hatten gegen die Wiedereröffnung der Schulen in der Krisenregion zum 6. April protestiert. Greenpeace will jetzt die örtlichen Bürger- und Umweltinitiativen in ihrem Kampf gegen die Grenzwerte unterstützen.

日本の２０１４年７～９月期の国内総生産（GDP）が２四半期続けてマイナス成長になったとの発表を受け、スイス各紙は一様にアベノミクスを批判した。日本銀行の追加金融緩和も含め、各紙は現政権の経済政策に疑問符をつけている。
「ニッポンに『アベゲドン』の危機？」との見出しを付けたのは、スイス通信（SDA/ ATS）だ。これは、安倍晋三首相とアルマゲドン（世界の終わり）を合わせた造語で、英国の経済誌がツイッターでそうつぶやいていたものだ。
株式市場からもてはやされているアベノミクスだが、１７日に内閣府が発表したGDPの実質成長率は１．６％減（年率換算）。民間エコノミストらの平均予測２．１％増とは大きく異なる結果となった。
スイス各紙はこれを受け、アベノミクスはGDPの２５０％以上を超える赤字を抱える日本の経済を回復させることはできないとの見方を強めている。スイス通信は、アベノミクスの３本の矢（金融緩和、財政出動、成長戦略）の３本目が放たれる前に、既にほかの２本の効果が薄れてきていると報じた。
左派の有力紙ターゲス・アンツァイガーは皮肉にこう綴る。「『日本は戻ってくる』と安倍首相はそう遠くはない過去に語っていた。世界のトップに戻る、という意味だ。アベノミクスという名の経済政策がスタートしてから２年弱、日本は本当に戻ってきた……危機へと」
なぜ景気が落ち込んだか
日本のGDP成長率がマイナスになった理由は何だろうか。ターゲス・アンツァイガー紙の特派員クリストフ・ナイトハルト氏は同紙のインタビューで、安倍首相が株価上昇に重点を置いた政策設計に問題があると批判する。「１３年７月、彼は自分の事務所に１台のモニターを用意させた。日経平均株価を見るためだ。日経平均株価が上がれば、経済が好調に見えて自分の人気も上がると考えたからだ。だが実際、日経平均株価は日本の経済状況を図るには不十分だ。このことは国民も知っている」
保守派の有力紙NZZも、当初は褒められたアベノミクスももはや効力を失っていると断じる。同紙は、日本の経済が失速している理由を二つ挙げる。一つは個人消費の落ち込み。もう一つは、企業投資の低迷だ。内需低迷で、企業は生産拡大よりも在庫整理を優先しており、投資に消極的だと論じる。
個人消費も企業投資も低迷していることは、安倍政権にとっては敗北にも等しいとするのは、スイス国営放送（SRF）だ。「安倍氏はここ数カ月、消費者や企業の心理を向上させようと集中的に取り組み、楽観的な見方を広げて景気を盛り上げようと心理学も活用した」と、あるエコノミストの分析を紹介する。「しかし、今のところ、この実験は失敗に終わっていると言わざるを得ない」
金を刷り続ける日銀に批判
スイス各紙はアベノミクスと並行して、日本銀行による追加金融緩和の是非も論じている。地方紙ザンクトガレン・タークブラットは、金融緩和のデメリットを被るのは国民だと書く。「政府と日銀は、株式市場を短期的に支援し、同時に円の価値を徐々に下げて輸出に拍車をかけようとしていた。しかし、輸出企業は円安効果の恩恵を消費者や製品開発に還元しなかった」
ターゲス・アンツァイガー紙は、日銀は通貨を守るという本来の任務を投げだし、新しいお金に飢える日本経済のために紙幣を刷り続ける「麻薬密売人」のようだと痛烈に批判する。
日銀の追加金融緩和は「正しい処方箋だったのか疑問だ」と論じるのはNZZだ。その理由として、過剰な円安では輸入企業の利益が大幅に減少し、燃料費も大幅に高くなった点を挙げる。また、「政治家が自分たちの宿題を片付けないことで日銀がまた金融政策に割り込んでいかねばならないかのような印象を市場に与える」ことも理由に加えている。
「総選挙は時間の無駄」
安倍政権は消費増税を先送りし、衆議院解散を発表した。地方紙アールガウアー・ツァイトゥングは「安倍氏は選挙を行うことで、景気回復がこれ以上遅れる前に、国民からアベノミクスへの信任を得ようとしている」と指摘している。
１２月に総選挙を行うことは「時間の無駄」だと断じるのは、スイス通信とNZZだ。安倍氏が約束した経済改革はまだ始まってもおらず、「構造改革および財政の健全化を行うには時間がない」と、スイス通信は東京在住のエコノミストの話を載せている。
NZZは次のようにまとめる。「構造改革、規制緩和、市場の自由化が行われるのを皆が待ち望んでいる。アベノミクスが良い経済政策であるならば、それを実行する時間がなくなりつつある。労働市場は制度が厳格で、農業にはあまりにも多くの補助金が費やされている。さらに法人税も高すぎる。エネルギー市場などほかの市場では競争がなさすぎる。ここで安倍氏は閣僚と共に勇気を見せなくてはならない。新しい選挙は、時間の無駄でしかない」

アベノミクスで米ドル英ポンドが円安に転じる前からスイスフランだけは円安傾向でした．すなわち日本人はハイジが好きでもスイス観光に行きたがらないわけです．ますます円安ですから，観光立国のスイスにとってアベノミクス＋日銀の政策は死活問題なんですね．だから批判してるだけのような気がします．

世界的にもニュースで取り上げられている、中国の深刻な大気汚染。APEC開催中だけは、中国政府の「努力」により青空が戻ったといいますが、それもAPECブルーなんて皮肉られてしまう始末です。
百聞は一見にしかず、実際の北京の空は何色なのか…。北京在住のZou Yiさんが、同じ窓から撮影し続けた北京の様子がこれ。モザイク絵のように並べるとその灰色の空とぼやけた景色がいかにひどいかわかります。
マサチューセッツ工科大の環境経済学者Michael Greenstone氏曰く、大気汚染問題により、中国北部の平均余命は5.5年ほど短くなっているといいます。空気なんて一個人ではなんともなりませんからね。はぁ。誰だって、青い空が見たい。

The Oxford Dictionaries 2014 word of the year has arrived. And that word is... vape. As in "I vape so hard I grew a robot lung, bro."
Oxford Dictionaries Online (not to be confused with the Oxford English Dictionary) chooses a word each year, providing blogs such as this one with plenty of things to wring our hands about. The entire hand-wringing industry would really be nowhere without these little nuggets of tech-speak ostensibly "celebrated" to antagonize the olds.
Take a quick look at past words like selfie (2013) or GIF (2012) and you'll find plenty for old people to be irrationally upset about. I mean really ― kids and their silly words these days!
"It's hard to anticipate what's going to capture the public imagination at any given moment," Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford dictionaries, told Time magazine in a baldfaced lie. "Vape only really caught on a few years ago and now we've seen a dramatic rise."
A dramatic rise indeed. What words did vape beat out? Normcore, bae, and slacktivism. The shortlist appears below.
bae. n. used as a term of endearment for one's romantic partner.
budtender n. a person whose job is to serve customers in a cannabis dispensary or shop.
contactless adj. relating to or involving technologies that allow a smart card, mobile phone, etc. to contact wirelessly to an electronic reader, typically in order to make a payment.
ndyref, in. an abbreviation of 'independence referendum', in reference to the referendum on Scottish independence, held in Scotland on 18 September 2014, in which voters were asked to answer yes or no to the question 'Should Scotland be an independent country?'
normcore n. a trend in which ordinary, unfashionable clothing is worn as a deliberate fashion statement.
slacktivism, n., informal actions performed via the Internet in support of a political or social cause but regarded as requiring little time or involvement, e.g. signing an online petition or joining a campaign group on a social media website; a blend of slacker and activism.
Better luck next year, indyref. Or not. As an American I have no idea what they're talking about.

今年もそろそろ締めに入りましたなあ。
Oxford Dictionaries Onlineでは毎年「ワード・オブ・ザ・イヤー」を選んでいて、今週その2014年版が発表されました。気になる結果は「vape」。主に「電子タバコを吸う」っていう動詞であり、「電子タバコ」そのものを指す名詞としても使われるみたいです。
Oxford Dictionaries Onlineによれば、「vape」という単語が使われる頻度は2013年後半から急上昇していました。特に2014年4月にはイギリスに「vape cafe」なるものが登場、ニューヨークでは屋内での電子タバコ利用禁止に対する抗議運動が起きたりして、使用頻度もピークを迎えました。
ちなみに2013年の言葉は「selfie」（セルフィー、自撮り）、2012年は「GIF」でした。どちらもまだまだ元気ですね。
一方2014年の言葉はvapeとなりましたが、最終候補にはそれ以外にもいくつか気になる言葉が残っていました。こんな感じです。
bae：（名詞）ある人の恋愛のパートナーに対する愛情を表す言葉として使われる（訳注：「baby」の略として使われているようです）。
budtender：（名詞）大麻を扱う薬局や店で顧客に対応することを仕事とする人物。
contactless：（形容詞）特に支払いのために、スマートカードや携帯電話等による電子リーダーへのワイヤレスな接触を可能にする技術に関わる、またはそれを含む。
indyref：（名詞）「independence referendum」（独立に関する国民投票）の略語。2014年9月18日に行われたスコットランドの独立に関する国民投票を指す。その際、投票者は「スコットランドは独立国家となるべきか？」という問いに対してイエスかノーか答えることが求められた。
normcore：（名詞）普通のファッショナブルでない服を、意図的なファッションステートメントとして着る流行。
slacktivism：（名詞）政治的または社会的な動機を支援するためにインターネット上で行われる非公式な活動だが、参加には時間や関わりがほとんど必要とされないと考えられている。たとえばオンライン署名やソーシャルメディアのWebサイト上でのキャンペーングループへの参加など。slacker（なまけもの）とactivism（行動派）の混合。
そういえば今年はアメリカの一部の州で嗜好用大麻が合法的に販売開始したり、Apple Payが発表されたり、アイスバケツチャレンジが賛否両論呼んだりしましたね。言葉と一緒に1年を振り返ることのできる、そんなリストになりました。

In Compton last year, police began quietly testing a system that allowed them to do something incredible: Watch every car and person in real time as they ebbed and flowed around the city. Every assault, every purse snatched, every car speeding away was on record―all thanks to an Ohio company that monitors cities from the air.
The Center for Investigative Reporting takes a look at a number of emerging surveillance technologies in a new video, but one in particular stands out: A wide-area surveillance system invented by Ross McNutt, a retired Air Force veteran who owns a company called Persistent Surveillance Systems.
McNutt describes his product as "a live version of Google Earth, only with TiVo capabilities," which is intriguing but vague (and also sounds a lot like the plot of this terrible Denzel movie). More specifically, PSS outfits planes with an array of super high-resolution cameras that allow a pilot to record a 25-square-mile patch of Earth constantly―for up to six hours.
It's sort of similar to what your average satellite can do―except, in this case, you can rewind the video, zoom in, and follow specific people and cars as they move around the grid. It's not specific enough to ID people by face, but, when used in unison with stoplight cameras and other on-the-ground video sources, it can identify suspects as they leave the scene of a crime.
The PSS system has been tested in cities including Baltimore and Dayton, and, last year, police officers in Compton used it to track crimes, including a necklace snatching. In one case, they could track a criminal as he approached a woman, grabbed her jewelry, and then ran to a getaway car. They eventually drove out of frame, which meant they weren't caught―but, as the Compton police explain in this video, the system told them that this particular car was involved, at the very least.
Plenty of critics argue the technology is an ominous invasion of privacy: Video surveillance free of any traditional technological barriers, tracking everyone and everything that moves in a city. But according to police and its creators, it's not as invasive as other systems, because it can't see into homes or identify faces. It "allows us to provide more security with less loss of privacy than any of the other options that are out there," says one officer. That's definitely one way to look at it. 赤信号で止まるな…とまで言われるLA南の危険地域コンプトンで、あらゆる車、あらゆる人間の動きをリアルタイムで空から監視する未来型システムを試験運用していたことがわかりました。
バークレーの報道機関「The Center for Investigative Reporting」が、今の捜査のテクノロジーはここまできてる、という最新特集で紹介してるんですが、すごいですよ。暴行も、バッグのひったくりも、車のスピード違反も、全部空から録画されるんです。
郡保安官事務局が監視を委託したのはオハイオ州の「Persistent Surveillance Systems（PSS）」社。米空軍を2007年に定年退職したRoss McNutt博士（動画の9:13）が創業した会社で、軍で博士が開発した広域ライヴ監視システム「Project Angel Fire」を一般の捜査に応用しています。
博士曰く、PSSは「Google Earthのライヴ版に、TiVoのような機能をつけたもの」なのだとか。あまりにも漠然としてて、デンゼル・ワシントン主演B級映画「デジャヴ」をうっかり連想してしまいますが、具体的には超高解像度カメラを飛行機（動画の8:33）に取り付けて飛ばし、下界の25平方マイル（64平方km）の区画を最長6時間監視できるシステムです。
「衛星でできるじゃん」と思っちゃいますけど、違うんです。PSSは動画を巻き戻して、ズームインし、その区画を動き回る人や車を追跡するところまでできちゃう。遠すぎて顔までは特定できませんが、それは信号や沿道の監視カメラが撮ってるので、空から時間と場所が特定できれば地上の映像と照合して、逃走犯の身元も特定できる、というわけですねーはい。
このPSSを試験運用中の市はボルチモア、デイトンで、コンプトンではネックレスひったくり犯の足取りも追うことができました。上のGIF画像は、泥棒が女性に近寄って、宝石ひったくって、待機している車まで走って逃げ去った場面。監視区域から外に出てしまったので逮捕には至りませんでしたが、「逃走に車が関わったのは重要な手がかり」だと保安官は話しています。
プライバシーの問題もありますが、警察とPSS開発元は、顔や家の中までは覗けないので「他の監視システムほどではない」と言ってますよ。どこの警察も購入までは踏み切っていませんけどね。
特集ではこのほか、サンディエゴ警察が導入した顔認識システムも紹介されてます（尋問しなくてもタブレットで顔を撮るだけで犯罪歴が全部出てくる）。現場から警官が指紋を送ると、FBIのデータセンターにある1億3700万人の指紋・顔写真・犯罪歴のデータベース（動画の3:03）と照合して一発で特定できる「次世代ID技術（NGI）」は今夏スタート。未来は着々とやってきますね…。

for example, -- becoming, by the time the number of the foreign students from every country in the world increases by 1.5 times and it has more than 30 percent of a student total for 12 years from 1998 to 2010 in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) .
It is in it and there is one country which is reducing every year the number of foreign students sent out to the United States.
They are our country and Japan.
In MIT, the number of Japanese foreign students decreased no less than 40 percent at this 10 every year.
Is it small Moreover, there are five Japanese undergraduate students who were on the register in Harvard University in the 2009 to 10 fiscal year.
And many of foreign students from Japan are forms, such as company dispatch, linguistic studying abroad, and exchange studying abroad is most and the Japanese who study abroad as students ordinary for degree studying abroad, i.e., degree acquisition, are very few.
A Japanese student is a university. When going on to a graduate school, it is even rare to consider studying abroad as a choice.
What may necessarily be bad just because the number of Japanese foreign students became fewer.

However, in the level of a country, an excellent Japanese runs out to the world rapidly, gains experience, and plays an active part in the world. We think that just growing up to be the talented people who can do it stops a decline of Japan, and it becomes a driving force made to revitalize.
We let you know that the basis of the belief and degree studying abroad can serve as experience of learning it is hard for a Japanese student to replace with, and I am supporting the younger generations who aspire after degree studying abroad, and think that it not only becomes an aid for growth as an individual of them and them, but he would like to contribute also to the future of Japanese society.

グローバル化の加速度的な進行は、それを好もうと好むまいと必定であり、それは学問の世界においても例外ではありません。20世紀後半に学問の中心地の地位を確立したア メリカには、世界中から優秀な教授や学生が集まり、その数は年々増える一方です。例えばマサチューセッツ工科大学(MIT) では、1998年から2010年までの12年間に、世界各国からの留学生の数は1.5倍に増え、学生総数の3割超を占めるまでになり ました。
その中にあって、アメリカへ送り出す留学生数を年々減らしている国がひとつあります。我が国・日本です。MITではこの10 年間に、日本人留学生の数が4割も減少しました。また、2009-10年度にハーバード大学に在籍した日本人学部生は僅か5人に過ぎません。しかも日本からの留学生の多くは、企業派遣、語学留学や交換留学などの形 態が殆どで、学位留学、つまり学位取得のために一般の学生として留学をする日本人はごく僅かです。日本の学生が大学 や大学院へ進学する際、留学を選択肢として考えることすら稀です。
日本人留学生の数が減ったからといって、何が悪いという訳ではないかもしれません。日本の外へ出る学生の割合が少ない理由の 一つは、日本に優れた大学があるからでしょう。しかし、我々が太平洋の向こうから母国を見る時、留学生数の減少が、日本社 会が活力を失っていっていることの反映に思えてならないのです。もちろん、個人レベルにおいては、海外へ出ることが万人にとって幸せ な選択ではあり得ません。しかし、国のレベルにおいては、優秀な日本人がどんどん世界へ飛び出し、経験を積み、世界で活躍 できる人材に成長することこそが、日本の衰退を食い止め、再活性化させる原動力になると、我々は考えます。

日本人留学生は１万９０００人で比率は２.２％です。
アメリカを知る日本人の若者がいないのも頷けます。
