クモの糸の実地での利用に関しては、既に進化過程の超長期間に渡る膨大な試行を経ているから、ほとんど問題が無いように思える。伸縮性があって耐熱性があって引張強度が高い上に紫外線にも強い。タンパク質合成技術は今後さらに盛んになりそうだ。

今般、世界的テノール歌手として名声の高いベー・チェチョルさんをお招きして、今日4月20日イースター復活節に合わせ、淀橋教会にて演奏会を開催しました。この演奏会は、当初私の勤めております聖路加病院の聖堂にて行う予定で、私が企画しておりましたが、座席数に限りがあり、多くの方にお聴きいただきたいということで淀橋教会にご協力いただくことになりました。ベーさんと私の出会いは、昨年私の102歳の誕生日を祝う会において、私の名古屋の親友である高木氏によってもたらされました。べーさんは甲状腺がんによって失われた右の声帯の発声機能を京都大学一色信彦名誉教授の見事な手術により回復されました。その歌声に大変感銘を受けた私は、一人でも多くの方にこの歌声を聴いて欲しいと感じ、今般の演奏会を企画いたしました。復活祭にふさわしいベーさんの歌声による讃美歌を中心とした美しい歌をお届けしました。

アップルが「圧倒的な進化」を謳うiOS 11。さまざまな改良が行われていますが、特に便利になったのがアシスタント機能のSiri。ついに、話しかけなくて使えるようになったんです。あわせて、その他の便利機能も紹介します。

• 【新機能01】こんどのSiriは 人目を気にせず使えます

「Hey Siri！」と話しかけるだけで様々なことをしてくれるSiri、本当に便利です。常に頼りたいところですが、外出先で声を出すのはどうしても人目が気になりますよね。iOS 11からは、音声入力を使わずに、テキストを入力して指示できるようになりました。

これまでも最小限の音声入力後、文章を修正するなどの方法で、テキスト入力の指示が可能ではありました。iOS 11では、アクセシビリティの設定をすれば、Siriの呼び出しから一切音声を必要としません。

テキストを入力して指示するには、「Siriにタイプ入力」をオンにするだけ。ホームボタンからSiriを呼び出すと、画面下部に「Siriにタイプ入力」の欄が現れるので、タップして文字入力します。これで音声の誤認識がなくなります。誤認識のたびに言い直すのって、地味に面倒でした。また、英語が先行しているものの、話し方もより人間らしくなってきました。

　巨大バイオ企業、モンサント。同社が売り出す除草剤の「影響」に対して追及の声を上げた研究者が、賞賛どころか、苛烈な非難の声にさらされている。さらには、当局や除草剤を使用する農家との間での対立構造も深刻化しているという。

ヴェトナム戦争で使用された枯葉剤をつくった農薬メーカーとして知られ、除草剤に耐性をもつ遺伝子組み換え作物（GMO）の開発で、いまや世界屈指の“農業マフィア”に成長したバイオ化学企業モンサント。同社はこれまで、GMOと除草剤のセット販売に加え、栽培農家によるGMO種子の採種・再利用を禁じる契約で、世界の種子市場における独占的な立場を確立してきた。

こうした背景から「欲望から生まれた悪魔の種子」といった批判がつきまとう同社に、新たな農薬の欠点を指摘した研究者たちとの間で深刻な不和が生じていることを、『NPR』をはじめとする米メディアが報じている。

遺伝子操作の“マッチポンプ”

1970年にモンサントが開発した「ラウンドアップ」は、グリホサートを主成分とした非選択性除草剤で、農作物や雑草を無差別に枯らす性質をもつ。この除草剤とセットで販売されているのが、遺伝子操作によってラウンドアップへの耐性を有した大豆や綿花、トウモロコシのGMO種子「ラウンドアップレディー」だ。

しかし、長年にわたるラウンドアップの過剰散布は、世界中でグリホサートに耐性をもつ雑草を生み出す結果を招いた。

そこでモンサントは、数年前から除草剤の主成分に従来のジカンバを採用した新たな戦略へ移行している。課題はジカンバの揮発性にある。ジカンバは散布された土壌や作物から蒸発しやすく、植物に有毒な雲を形成しながら予測不能な方向へ拡散することが報告されている。そこでモンサント、BASF、デュポンの3社は、ジカンバの揮発性を抑えた新たな化学式を考案した。

これがすべての騒動の火種となった。

モンサントが打ち出した低揮発性の化学式は、特許製品であることを理由に、各大学の研究者による科学的な裏付けが一切なされていないのだ。つまり、揮発性による近隣農家への影響や安全性が、公平な観点から保証されないままに市場へ放たれたことになる。

★1/27のワシントンポスト紙の一面にトンデモない写真が現れた！
1月下旬にワシントンDCを襲ったsnowstorm（吹雪）を取り扱った一面記事の写真が、あろうことか・・・

アイスクリームを片手に持って走る若い男

（後に Zach Burroughsさんと判明）だったからだ！！
　この写真記事が新聞に掲載された後、当然のごとく
「なんだなんだこの男は？！吹雪の中コートも着ずに！」
「なんで吹雪の真っ只中にアイスクリームを買うんだ？？」
と問い合わせが殺到し、しまいには本人が弁明する始末になったというわけです！ザックさん曰く、
