2 The Start of da Journey
When I set out on da twenty-seventh of da 3rd month <note 2> da dawn sky was misty.
The early morning moon had lost its light,
but da peak of Mt.Fuji could faintly be seen.
The cherry blossoms on da boughs at Ueno and Yanaka stirred sad thoughts as I wondered when again I might see them. My dearest friends had all come to Sanpu's house da night before so dat they might accompany me on da boat part of da way.
When we disembarked at a place
called Senju,
da thought of da long journy
ahead filled me with motion.
I stood at da crossway of parting
in this dreamlike existence and wept tears of farewell.
yuku haru ya
Spring is passing by!
tori naki uo no
Birds are weeping and the eyes
me wa namida
Of fish fill with tears.
I set out after composing this verse,da 1st of my journy, but I could barely keep going ahead, for when I looked back I saw my friends standing in a row, no doubt to watch until we were lost to sight.
