Outline

Healthcare innovation has been supported by the emergence of new diagnostic tools and treatment procedures, recently triggered by the influence of patient advocacy groups. This presentation elaborates a dynamic view of innovation in medical technology and explains how physicians can contribute to emerging innovations, described as a service innovation function, beyond product development and patents. In Japan, with healthcare costs rising sharply, the benefits offered by advancing technology versus the fiscal cost have become a crucial area of public and policy debate.
