　己の声は枯れ寂びて、波打つようにしか出ぬが、これもまた自然の理。わが老いも、桜の老いも等しき想いで声にする。

　藤沢周『世阿弥最後の花』の一節だ。

　この美しい日本語は、不十分な英語ではあるが、

“...Nobody knows buried trees will be fallen down... 

　A flower in the heart will remain.

 　We can just see a throng of people who come to see new flowers in full bloom now...”　　

　Since my voice withered, all I can do is to recite undilutedly, but it is the providence of nature.

　Accepting both cherry blossom and I have already grown old, I will chant.

くらいに訳せると思うし、外国人に意味は理解してもらえるだろう。

　だが、原文のよさはまるで伝わらない。

　日本語の古語、漢字の使い分け、憐みの心。

　藤沢周『世阿弥最後の花』を読んで、これらを英語にするのは不可能ではないだろうかと改めて思った。

　大昔に何度か仕事をした外国人は、自分は日本語がよくわかるということを強調したい一心からだろうが、よく「日本語は簡単。英語のほうむずかしい」と言っていた。

　それはある意味あたっているが、ある意味外れている。

　英語は同じ単語にいろんな意味があり、状況によって、そして使う人によって意味が使い分けられるので、その意味を特定する(detecting the meaning)のはむずかしい。

　だが、日本語のむずかしさは上に書いたようなことであり、これを外国人に理解してもらうのは容易なことではない。

　そしてこれが日本語の至上の美しさでもある。

　マーク・トウェーン『ハックルベリー・フィンの冒険』のような名作を訳す機会にめぐまれるなど、英語と英語で書かれた文学の楽しさとすばらしさをありがたいことに日々味わっている。

　だが、この藤沢周の『世阿弥最後の花』のようなすぐれた日本文学作品とそれを織りなす美しい日本語に触れるたびに、日本語の豊饒さと奥深さを感じる。

　そして英語も日本語も学べるわが身の僥倖を噛みしめている。

　pivotは「軸頭、旋回軸、ピボット」であるが、日常的には「中心点、要点、かなめ」の意味で使われる。

 　レアジョブ英会話のDaily News Articleが大変勉強になる。

　最近はこれを聞き取ってから、講師とディスカッションすることが多くなった。

　むずかしいわけではないのだが、少なくとも自分が普段使わない表現も多く出てくるので、確実に聞き取れるようにしておきたい。

　昨日4月29日のニュースは、冷たい気候の影響で動物保護団体の施設に電気が供給されなくなり、ウミガメが次々に死んでいくということが起こり、地元の人たちが救援に駆け付けたというものだ。

　drop offはこの場合は「死ぬ」だ。

　英語を読んでも聞いてもすんなり理解できるようになりたいが、なかなかそういうわけにはいかない。日々の訓練で改善に努めるしかないだろう。

 

 

PACK RAT

　pack ratは「物が捨てられない人」。

　「ウッドラット、モリネズミ」であるが、「特にふくらんだほおに物を入れて運び巣の中にためる習性があるネズミ」（リーダーズ）。

と定義されている。
