「敷居が高い」は英語で何と言うか？

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこれについて考えてみよう。

「敷居が高い」は、申し訳なくて相手の家を訪れにくいという意味のことわざです。敷居とは、障子やふすまを立てるためのレールで、その部分が高く感じるほど家に入りづらい様子を表す。

　たとえば、「ブランドのバッグがほしいが、グッチやルイヴィトンはわたしにはちょっと敷居が高いな」であれば、「グッチやルイヴィトンは値段が高くてわたしには手が出ない」と考える。

　であれば、次のように言えばいいだろう。

　Asahi Weeklyをさらに熱心に読んでいる。今考えても、ここに書かせてもらったのは実に光栄だし、「英語の媒体に英語で寄稿する」ことは今後さらに強く意識したい。

　そのために必要なのは、先日もどこかのトークショーで申し上げたが、英語の読書量を増やすことだと思う。

　最近は英日翻訳の仕事を精力的に進めているものの、「幅広く読む」ことができていないので、Asahi Weeklyを毎週隅々まで読むことを徹底したい。

　村上春樹が表紙のApril 23-30号のWeekly Picksには、人口が世界最大になったインドであるが、女性の社会進出が遅れているとする記事が掲載されている。

EXPOSED

　exposedは形容詞として「《危険などに》さらされた; 絶縁されていない; むきだしの, 露出した」（リーダーズ）といった意味で使われる。

　だが、英日翻訳では状況によってはなかなか訳しにくいことがある。

  feel exposed and frightenedはthat以下のことで、「危険にさらされていて、おそろしいと感じる」ことであるから、試訳くらいでよいと思う。

　

 

 

 

TO EMBARRASS, EMBARRASSMENT

　動詞embarrassはOxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaryにあるとおり、

　to make sb feel shy, uncomfortable or ashamed, especially in a social situation

「～にきまりの悪い[恥ずかしい、気まずい]思いをさせる」ということ。

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この動詞を復習しよう。

『インフィニティ・ウォー』（2018年）のトニー・スタークの名ゼリフに、この動詞が使われていた。

優秀な人たちにもかかわらず、気持ちよくいられる状況から離れていくと、どうして強い不安を募らせることになるのだろう？

　vulnerable to embarrassmentは、「恥ずかしく思う状況にもろい」ということなので、主語の視点から「困った状況になることはできれば避けたい」くらいでいいと思うし、試訳くらいでよいだろう。
