This deft translation by Morgan Giles of Korean-Japanese writer Yu Miri’s Tokyo Ueno Station is a welcome and necessary addition to the translated Japanese canon, which unfolds in the memories of a deceased narrator occupying the eponymous train station. The book is an observation of Japan at the gateway of its capital, at multiple thresholds of shifting eras, told in the bardo of a mourning father and compatriot, reciting his surroundings and circumstances as if a prayer, a mantra.

　eponymousは「ある作品の題名となった」。

　English Journalはもう30年以上購読しているが、いちばん好きなコーナーはWorld Newsだ。

　新鮮なニュースが、興味を引くイントロダクションと、驚くほど正確で読みやすい訳で学習できるうえに、「これが知りたい、覚えたい、使ってみたい」という語彙表現もすべてついている。

　試みに、最新の2020年9月号が届いたので、それを見てみよう。

　3本収録されているニュースの1本目は「トランプ大統領、中国との貿易合意の再交渉には応じず」だ。

　このイントロダクションは次のように記されている。

　米中両国が貿易摩擦解消に向けて署名した貿易合意の実現に暗雲が垂れこめています。新型コロナウイルス蔓延は中国の責任とするアメリカの主張に反発し、中国が合意の見直しを検討しているためです。トランプ大統領は再交渉には応じないとし、両国の対立が深まっています。

　短いが、実にわかりやすい解説だ。そして次のニュースの見事な導入になる。

「同紙は、中国政府の交渉担当顧問官の一部は合意を破棄し、貿易交渉を再開して、中国に有利な内容への見直しを検討中、と発表しました」がよく見る翻訳文だが、これだと主語「同紙」と「発表しました」のあいだにもうひとつ主語と動詞を含んだ文が入ってしまうので、非常にわかりにくくなってしまう。

　英日翻訳の場合、英語の構造からこうした「玉ねぎ文」を作ってしまうことがよくあるのだが、このあたりは英語にある情報をすべて取り込みつつ、一読でわかる、実に明快な日本語に置き換えられている。

　このコーナーの訳は北川蒼さんが担当しているが、いつも大変勉強させてもらっている。

　そして注も実に気が利いている。

　tilt the scaleは「（有利に・不利に）局面を変える」と記されている。

　研究社『リーダーズ英和辞典』には、次の語彙定義と例文があるが、

　tip [tilt, turn] the scale(s)

　(1) 《平衡状態にあった》状況[局面]を(一方向へ)決定づける.

　･The scales were turned in favor of…. 事態が変わって…が有利になった

　このあたりの情報を実にうまく整理して「一言で伝えてくれる」。

History bubbles up from below by people no one has heard of.

  　ミネアポリスで黒人男性ジョージ・フロイドさんが白人警察官によって拘束死させられた事件を契機に、アメリカ全体で抗議デモが起こっている。
　これはアメリカが抱える長い黒人差別の問題が根差している。
　どうしてこんなことになってしまっているのか、アメリカの長い歴史をさかのぼって考えてみる必要があるだろう。
手前味噌になるが、2018年12月に刊行したジェームズ・ウエスト・デイビッドソン『若い読者のためのアメリカ史』第36章に、黒人差別の問題が詳細に描かれている。
　ぜひご覧いただきたい。

Sometimes, it seems as if history revolves mostly around people in high places. “Two men, sitting on opposite sides of the world,” as President Kennedy noted—deciding whether to “bring an end to civilization.” But history bubbles up from below, too, moved by people no one has heard of, doing things that the powerful would never dare. Kennedy witnessed this the year after the Cuban missile crisis, when a quarter of a million Americans came to Washington to take up the unfinished business of slavery and freedom.

A preliminary survey of New York state residents found that nearly 14 percent of those tested had antibodies against the novel coronavirus, suggesting that some 2.7 million may already have been infected, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Thursday.

The pandemic has also made clear the irrationality of the current system. Unbelievably, in the midst of the worst health care crisis in modern history, thousands of medical workers are being laid off and many hospitals and clinics are on the verge of going bankrupt and shutting down. In truth, we don’t have a health care “system.” We have a byzantine network of medical institutions dominated by the profit-making interests of insurance and drug companies. But it is also true that poor and working-class people are suffering higher rates of sickness and are dying at much higher rates than wealthy people.

This is especially true of the African-American community. This disparity in outcomes from exposure to the virus is a direct reflection not only of a broken and unjust health care system but also an economy that punishes, in terrible ways, the poor and working class of this country.

In addition to millions of lower-income families not having any health insurance, Covid-19 virus is vicious and incredibly opportunistic in attacking people with pre-existing conditions and weakened immune systems. For a wide variety of socio-economic reasons, it is the poor and working class in this country who are exactly in that position as they suffer higher rates of diabetes, drug addiction, obesity, stress, high blood pressure, asthma and heart disease — and are most vulnerable to the virus. Poor and working-class people have lower life expectancies than rich people in general, and that tragic unfairness remains even truer with regard to this pandemic.

And, for the working class, that means leaving your home and doing jobs that interact with other people, some of whom are spreading the virus.
