Just came back from Goma after spending 3 days in rural area to cover IDP camps in the mountains.
I can say that it was the second most challenging drive after the one during sandstorm in Iraq desert in 2003. On our way, we got stuck for an hour behind a truck stuck in the mud. The "hotel" we stayed was pretty interesting as well. There was only a bed in a small room with cardboard wall. No running water, no electricity. It was supposed to be the best hotel in town. Although it was $5 per night, I thought it was still too expensive.
The mountainous area is stunningly beautiful. People in the villages are sincere and welcoming despite the long-lasting war and collapsed government.
"You make a grave mistake going to Goma: You will never want to leave.....Heart-achingly beautiful--and brutal"
My friend and ex-colleague at the Chicago Tribune, Paul Salopek told me prior to my departure to DRC. Now I know what he meant.
Yesterday on our way back to Goma, we got a flat but we found out the spare tire we carried was not the right size. Luckily, there was a town about 10km away. Our driver took the flat by motorcycle taxi to the town. After hour and a half, he successfully came back with fixed tire.
Last night, we were back to civilization. It was nice taking shower after 3 days.

山間部にある避難民キャンプを取材するために３日間を僻地で過ごしてきた。
全く舗装されていないでこぼこの山道を、途中一泊をいれて７時間。僕のこれまでの経験では、砂嵐のイラクの砂漠の次に過酷なドライブだった。（とはいっても僕が運転したわけではないんだけれど）
まだ雨期が終わっていないので、毎日のように激しい雨が路面を濡らし続ける。途中、泥濘にはまり動けなくなったトラックが道を塞ぎ、１時間ほど立ち往生。
宿泊したホテルもただ小さな部屋にベッドがおいてあるという簡素なもので、水も電気も通っていない。これでも町では一番立派な宿泊施設だという。一泊５ドルだが、これでもちょっと高いなあ、という感じ。
しかし緑に覆われた山々が連なるこの地域は本当に美しい。途中通り過ぎる村々では薪や水を頭にのせて運ぶ村人の姿があり、僕を含めた外国人が一般的に連想する「美しいアフリカ」というのがぴったりくるような風景がここにはある。長年続いてきた内戦や政治的腐敗にも関わらず、村の人々は誠実で僕ら外国人に対しても寛大だ。
「コンゴに行くのは間違いだな。あの美しい国に一度行ったら最後、もうそこを離れたくなるなるぞ。。。」
トリビューン時代の同僚であり、友人でもある記者のポールが、コンゴにくる前に僕に投げかけた「忠告」を思い出す。
ゴマに戻る帰路は、僕らの車がパンクし、おまけにスペアに積んでいたタイアのサイズが合わないというお粗末さ。幸いなことに１０キロほど先に小さな町があったので、ドライバーがオートバイでそこまでタイヤを運んで修理するあいだ、またもや２時間ほど立ち往生。
昨夜ようやくゴマのホテルに到着し、３日ぶりにシャワーを浴びることができた。
