ツタヤで「ベニスの商人」を借りて見る ・・・ The Merchant of Venice

ケネス・ブラナーの「ハムレット」も見たくて見なかった映画だけれど、
最近「真夏の夜の夢」を思い出してから、「ベニスの商人」の素晴らしいセリフを思い出していたところ
イル・ポスティーノの監督マイケル・ラドフォードが作っていたことを発見して、娘がCDをTSUTAYAに
借りに行くので、一緒に借りて来てもらっていました。

ベニスの商人の素晴らしいセリフをみつけるのに、翻訳の本と原文を照らし合わせることは
大変なので映画なら一度に合わせることができます。



この映画では見事にシャイロックを主役にして、人種差別についての説得力がすごかったです。
アル・パシーノの同じ人間なのに差別される理不尽さのセリフが迫力ありました。
当時ベニスに在ったゲットーについても説明がありました。
アル・パシーノが見事でした。最後に改宗させられてしまうシャイロックが哀れでした。
キリスト教のおごりというかそういうものも表現されていました。

この戯曲には素晴らしい台詞がちりばめられています。

ネリッサの中庸についての言葉。

You would be, sweet madam, if your miseries were in
the same abundance as your good fortunes are: and
yet, for aught I see, they are as sick that surfeit
with too much as they that starve with nothing. It
is no mean happiness therefore, to be seated in the
mean: superfluity comes sooner by white hairs, but
competency lives longer.

過ぎたるは及ばざるごとしと同じような意味。中くらいの幸せがいい。



箱選びのバッサーニオの「外観は中身を裏切るものだ」というセリフ

So may the outward shows be least themselves:
The world is still deceived with ornament.
In law, what plea so tainted and corrupt,
But, being seasoned with a gracious voice,
Obscures the show of evil? In religion,
What damned error, but some sober brow
Will bless it and approve it with a text,
Hiding the grossness with fair ornament?
There is no vice so simple but assumes
Some mark of virtue on his outward parts:

そして、バッサーニオのために、自分を高めたいという願い。

You see me, Lord Bassanio, where I stand,
Such as I am: though for myself alone
I would not be ambitious in my wish,
To wish myself much better; yet, for you
I would be trebled twenty times myself;

Is sum of something, which, to term in gross,

Commits itself to yours to be directed,
As from her lord, her governor, her king.
Myself and what is mine to you and yours

裁判の後の満足こそ私の報酬と話すシーン

He is well paid that is well satisfied;
And I, delivering you, am satisfied
And therein do account myself well paid:
My mind was never yet more mercenary.

仕事って金銭的な報酬だけでなく、信頼してもらえることとか
達成感とかそういうものが自分への本当の報酬になりますね。



ベニスの商人で一番有名なセリフはポーシャの裁判での
The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
の下りではないかと思いますが、私はジェシカとロレンツィオの星空の下での
シーンが一番好きでした。よく聞くと星の光から音楽のことを
話していますね。

How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank!
Here will we sit and let the sounds of music
Creep in our ears: soft stillness and the night
Become the touches of sweet harmony.
Sit, Jessica. Look how the floor of heaven
Is thick inlaid with patines of bright gold:
There's not the smallest orb which thou behold'st
But in his motion like an angel sings,
Still quiring to the young-eyed cherubins;
Such harmony is in immortal souls;
But whilst this muddy vesture of decay
Doth grossly close it in, we cannot hear it.

Enter Musicians
Come, ho! and wake Diana with a hymn!
With sweetest touches pierce your mistress' ear,
And draw her home with music.

Music
JESSICA
I am never merry when I hear sweet music.

LORENZO
The reason is, your spirits are attentive:
For do but note a wild and wanton herd,
Or race of youthful and unhandled colts,
Fetching mad bounds, bellowing and neighing loud,
Which is the hot condition of their blood;
If they but hear perchance a trumpet sound,
Or any air of music touch their ears,
You shall perceive them make a mutual stand,
Their savage eyes turn'd to a modest gaze
By the sweet power of music: therefore the poet
Did feign that Orpheus drew trees, stones and floods;
Since nought so stockish, hard and full of rage,
But music for the time doth change his nature.
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils;
The motions of his spirit are dull as night
And his affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music.

台詞が長いので映画ではカットされていましたが、
字幕の翻訳が良かったです。


夜空を見上げながら、ロレンツィオのセリフです。

永遠の魂が奏でる歌声だ・・
だから朽ちていく肉体をまとっている人間には聞こえない・・

ジェシカの音楽を楽しめないというセリフの後で
ロレンツィオがこう言います。

心を自由にして・・
こころに音楽を持たず、甘い調べに感動しないものは、策略、略奪
暴力に走る
精神には光がささず、感情は闇に沈んでいる

音楽は確かに心を和らげますが、あの音楽が好きなドイツ国民が
ナチスに走るのだから、戦争という狂気のなかでは人間も狂わされて
しまいます。


キャストはアル・パシーノのシャイロック、ジェレミー・アイアンズのアントーニオが
とてもよかった。ポーシャは今まで私が持っていたイメージとは違うけれど、
ボッティチェリの絵の様でした。
