　「才色兼備」は英語で何と言えばいいか？　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この表現を考えてみよう。

　both bright and beautifulは決まった言い方。すべてbで始まっていることに注目。

〇Practical Example 　

　"Risa is both bright and beautiful."  

　"Yeah. All the guys in the company are head over heels for her."

　「莉紗は才色兼備だ」

　「ああ、うちの会社の男たちはみんな彼女にぞっこんだ」

　head over heelsは、「完全に、すっかり」

●Extra Point

　 もう一例。both brains and beautyという言い方をしてもよい。

OVERHAUL

  　overhaulは「分解検査、分解修理、オーバーホール」。 　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この表現を学習する。

○Practical Example  

　"EC perked up the engine with a complete overhaul."

　"Now, his car runs like a dream."

　「ECは徹底的に点検整備をしてエンジンの調子をよくした」

　「今やあいつの車はよく走るよ」 　

　run like a dreamで、「すばらしく調子よく機能する［動く、走る］」。

●Extra Point  

　動詞も同形で「…を分解検査［修理］する、オーバーホールする、改善［修正］する」の意味で使われる。ただし、名詞はoverhaulのoに第一ストレスがあるが、動詞はうしろのaにそれがある。

◎Extra Example 

　"Hilke Industries is overhauling the manufacturing process it uses to produce its soft drinks."  

　"It will enable the company to produce beverages faster and more efficiently."

　「ヒルキ・インダルトリーズはソフトドリンクの製造工程を改善している」

TO FREAK OUT

  　freak outはアメリカ俗語で、「激しい興奮状態になる」「（麻薬のため）常規を逸した行動をする」という意味で特に若者のあいだでよく使われる。 　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この表現を学習しよう。 　

　状況によっては、日本語の「パニくる」という表現にぴったりかもしれない。

　"When I found out my wife had been cheating on me, I freaked out."   

　"Don’t freak out!"

　「妻が浮気をしていたことを知ったら、俺はパニくっておかしくなっちまった」　

　「落ちついて」

●Extra Point  

　「(麻薬で)現実から逃避する」の意味もあるが、ポジティブな意味で使われることもある。 　

　先日東京ブルーノートでNile Rodgers(1952-  )率いるChicのショウを楽しんだが、彼らの1978年の全米No. 1ヒットは、"Le Freak"だ。

　その歌詞を見てみよう。

　alacrityは、「機敏、敏速」「積極性」。 　やや格式ばった言い方。

　"He was also very happy to see her."

　「チャイムが鳴ると、静子はいそいそと立ち上がって玄関にフレデリック迎えた」

　 「二つ返事で…する」といったことを表現したいときは、この語を使えばいいかもしれない。

PER DIEM

　per diemは、「（セールスマンなどへの） 1 日当たりの手当、日当」。

　"While on a business trip, you can claim a per-diem expense allowance."

　"Does it include payment for meals?"

　「出張中は日当を請求できる」

　「食事代も含みますか？」

  　interimは、「合間、しばらくの間」。

　形容詞も同形で、「当座の、臨時の、仮の、暫定的な、中間の」の意味で使われる。

TO ENTHRALL

　動詞enthrallは「夢中にさせる、とりこにする」。

　synergyは「相乗効果」。この語は最近日本語でも使われているように思う。

SHALLOW

  　shallowは、「浅い、あさはかな、軽率な」。 　

　今日のGetUpEnglishは、この形容詞を学習する。 「水位が浅い」といった意味でも使われるが、次のような状況でも用いられる。

TO BURGEON

　burgeonは名詞で「芽、新芽」であるが、 動詞も同形で「急に成長［発展、増大］する」。

　やや格式ばった言い方だ。

　 「（電話の）呼び出し」の意味でも使われる。

　「わかったわ、フレデリック」

　動詞としても使われる。

  　-consciousは、合成語で、「…を意識した、…意識の強い」。

  　動詞empowerは、「…に…する権限［能力］を与える」。やや格式的な言い方。

　受身形で使われることが多い。

　"And she doesn’t have to be ordered around by anyone."

　無生物を主語として、能動態で使われることもある。
