　endearingはすでに2017/11/05のGetUpEnglishでも学んだが、今日のGetUpEnglishではendearingの用例をもう少し紹介したい。

　endearingは「かわいらしい、愛らしい、親しみのもてる」

○Practical Example

　"Risa has an endearing way of talking that makes her popular."

　"She does.  Every hung on her every word in the last training session."

　「莉紗はかわいらしい話し方をするので人気があるんだ」

　「確かにこのあいだのトレーニング・セッションでもみんな彼女の言葉を一言も聞き漏らすまいと熱心に聞き入っていたよ」

EXPRESSIVE

 GetUpEnglishをご覧いただいている方で、この表現を知らない人はいないと思うが、本日はこの語をどう使うか考えてみよう。

　exprerssive（表現豊かな、表現に富む）は次のようによく使われる。

　"Her English is as good as a native speaker."

　"In addition, Fumie-seinsei makes very expressive hand motions when she speaks in English."

  「彼女の英語力はネイティブ並みだ」

TO EVICT, EVICTION

 動詞evictは「(法的に)〈借地人など〉を立ちのかせる」。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの語を学習する。

　"Anyone on the floor who is not officially registered will be evicted from the exhibition."

 「公式な申請をしていない方は、展示会から立ち退いていただきます」

●Extra Point

  名詞形はeviction.

◎Extra Example

  "Mr. K is threatened with eviction from the apartment for failing to pay his rent."  

  「Kさんは家賃滞納のためにアパートからの立ち退きを求められている」

 

TO EMASCULATE

  動詞emasculateは「去勢[除雄]する、無気力にする、弱くする」。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの語を学習する。

○Practical Example　　

Men may eschew green products and behaviors to avoid feeling feminine.  In one study, we threatened the masculinity of male participants by showing them a pink gift card with a floral design and asking them to imagine using the card to purchase three products (lamp, backpack, and batteries).  Compared to men shown a standard gift card, threatened men were more likely to choose the non-green rather than green version of each item.  The idea that emasculated men try to reassert their masculinity through non-environmentally-friendly choices suggests that in addition to littering, wasting water, or using too much electricity, one could harm the environment merely by making men feel feminine.

EVERY HOUR ON THE HOUR

  every hour on the hourは「毎正時に、毎時零分に」。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現を学習する。

  "When does the shuttle bus leave for the airport?"

  "Every hour on the hour."

  「シャトルバスはいつ空港に向かいますか？」

　「毎時ぴったりに出ます」

  That station broadcasts the news every hour on the hour.

「あの局は毎時ぴったりにニュースを放送する」

☆Extra Extra Point

  every hour on the half-hour（毎30分ぴったりに）という言い方もよくする。

THERE IS MORE TO[IN] SOMETHING THAN MEETS THE EYE

　there is more to [in] something than meets the eyeは「…には見かけ以上の価値［理由、問題］がある、…には一見しただけではわからないところがある」。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現を学習する。

 「…は目で見る以上のものがある」が文字どおりの意味。現在形で使うことが多く、This problem seems easy, but there is more to it than meets the eye.（この問題は一見易しそうだが, 実際は見かけ以上に複雑だ）のような形で使われる。

　人に対しても物に対しても使う。

○Practical Example

  Hiroko is a famous idol singer. but there’s more to her than meets the eye.  She graduated with honors from Stanford University, where she majored in computer technology.

  「ひろ子はアイドル歌手だが、見た目以上のものがある。スタンフォード大学でコンピュータ工学を専攻し、優秀な成績で卒業した」

  悪い意味でも使われる。

◎Extra Example

  "Don't be too quick to accept his proposal. I'm sure there is more to it than meets the eye."

　"I know.  Justin Hammer must be up to some kind of stratagem."

　「彼の提案に焦ってとびつかないほうがいい。きっと表面だけでは判断できないところがあるはずだ」

　「わかってる。ジャスティン・ハマーは何か企んでる」

 

MAKE EYES AT SOMEONE

　make eyes at someoneで、「…に色目を使う、…と熱い視線を交わす」。わざと「目つきを作る」（make eyes）ということから生まれた表現と思われる。

　今日はこの表現を学習する。

　"Why don't you ask Romanoff for a dance? She's been making eyes at you all night, Banner."

　「ロマノフにダンスを申し込めよ。一晩中きみに色目を使ってるぜ、バナー」

  もう一例。

  I caught Tony making eyes at another woman while on our dinner date last night.  It’s quite disgusting. 

  「まったくトニーったら、昨日の夜の食事のデート中に、別の女性に色目を使っていたの。すっごくムカつく」

 

EGO TRIP

  ego tripは「 自分勝手な行為、ひとりよがり(なふるまい)」。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの語を学習する。

  be on an ego trip（自分勝手な行動をする）の形で使われる。

○Practical Example

  Since having published several books, she has been on a huge ego trip and often a deaf ear to her tutor’s advice.

 「何冊か本を出してからというもの、彼女は独りよがりなふるまいをするようになり、指導教官のアドバイスに耳を貸さない」

●Extra Point

  「自己満足でいい気持ちになること」の意味でも使われる。

◎Extra Example

  I can't stand that the guy when he gets on one of his ego trips about how he's going to enter the University of Tokyo and become prime minister.

  「ぼくはあの男はがやれ東大に入るだの、総理になるだのといい気になって話すのには我慢ならない」

TO EVADE

  動詞evadeは「(巧みに)避ける、かわす、のがれる、すり抜ける」。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの語を紹介する。

○Practical Example

  He managed to evade the long arm of the law for ten years before they were finally arrested.

「彼は10年間なんとか警察の目をくらましてきたが、ついに逮捕されてしまった」

TO ENDEAR, ENDEARING

  動詞endearは「いとしく思わせる、慕わせる」。

  It was her shy smile that endeared her to me.

「ぼくに彼女のことをいとおしく思わせたのは、その恥ずかしげな微笑だった」

●Extra Point

  形容詞形としてendearing（かわいらしい、愛らしい）もよく使われる。

  It’s endearing when my grandmother asks me about the latest pop music.

  「祖母が最近のポップ音楽について聞いてくるのがかわらいらしい」

 

 

TO EXTEND

  動詞extendは「広げる、拡張する」「拡大する、(…に)延長する」や、「（期間などを）延ばす、延長する」、さらには「（手足を）伸ばす」のほか、いろいろな意味で使われる、

　本日のGetUpEnglishはこの動詞の注意したい意味の使え方を学習しよう。

　「（…を～まで）対象とする、（…に）適用する」の意味でも使う。

○Practical Example

　"We plan to extend the service to club members and their family."

　「そのサービスはクラブのメンバーと家族も対象とする予定です」

●Extra Point

　「（恩恵･親切･救助などを）及ぼす、施す」の意味でも使われる。

◎Extra Point

  "I would like to extend an invitation to you Hiroko and your husband for dinner."

「ひろ子とご主人を夕食にお招きしたいと存じます」

 

 

ENHANCEMENT

　enhancementは「高揚、増大、増進、向上」。

　辞書の定義でははっきり感じがつかめないかもしれない。今日のGetUpEnglishはこの語の使い方を学習しよう。

○Practical Example

　"The Chairman of the translation association became increasingly preoccupied with the enhancement of revenues."

　"He needs to ENHANCE his translation skill instead."

　「あの翻訳協会の委員長はいかに総収入をふやすかということにますます没頭するようになった」

　「そんなことより、てめえの翻訳力を向上させないといけないのにな」

●Extra Point

  もう一例。次のようにもよく使われる。

 　"I believe small enhancements to a work environment such as arranging flowers and adding a rest area can lead to much higher productivity."

  「小さな環境の変化の向上、たとえば花を用意したり、休憩スペースを設けることで、生産性がぐっと高まると思う」

 

 

GO EASY ON SOMEONE

  2017/04/03のGetUpEnglishでgo easy on...を学習した。

  これはgo easy on something, すなわち、「…」に「もの、こと」が来る場合であるが、go easy on someoneと「人」がくる表現もある。

　これは「（人に）手加減する」という意味で使われる。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現を学習しよう。

　"Sure, he made a mistake, but I think we should go easy on him." 

　"We will. After all, this is his first year on the job."

　「確かにミスをしたけど、彼には手加減をすべきだと思う」

MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS

　educatedは「教育を受けた」とか「教養のある」ことであるが、「知識［経験］に基づいた」という意味もある。そしてmake an educated guessで「知識や経験などに基づいておよその見当をつける」「目星をつける」という意味で用いられる

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの表現を学習する。

　 "I don't know who the murderer is, but I can make an educated guess."

　「誰が殺ったのかは知らないが、目星はつくよ」

  もう一例。次のようにも使われる。

  "I’m getting nervous about my presentation before the board members."

  "Take it easy, Hiroko.　I suggested you make an educated guess who might ask which questions."

　「役員たちの前でのプレゼンが不安になってきた」

TO EXEMPT

  動詞exemptは「免除する」。

　今日のGetUpEnglishはこの語を学習する。

  Because Shinnosuke was exceptionally good at soccer, the high school exempted him from its entrance examination.

  「シンノスケは並はずれてサッカーがじょうずだったので、高校は彼の入学試験を免除した」

  次のような形でもよく使われる。

  "The Internal Revenue Service did subject conservative political groups to undue scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status."
