医師のジョー（ゲイリー・クーパー）は駅馬車強盗に襲われて重傷を負ったエリザベス（マリア・シェル）を救う。
エリザベスはジョーを慕うようになるがジョーはそれをかたくなに拒む。ジョーは女性不信で、もう、女は懲り懲りなんだね。
ジョーに求愛するが拒否された彼女は、町のボスのフレンチ―（カール・マルデン）と共同で金鉱の採掘を始める。
やがて、金鉱が発見される。フレンチ―は、エリザベスを自分の女にして独り占めを企てる。
此の映画は、昔、東芝の白黒テレビ１４インチで観たんだね。中学生ぐらいだったかな？ 派手な銃撃戦なんてない西部劇でボーと観てたよ。
カール・マルデンのおっさんが、マリア・シェルを襲ってるところへゲイリー・クーパーが助けに入る。
「これからエエとこやのに邪魔すんなっ」 「うるさいっ、此のエロ野郎っ」 ボコッ、マルデンのおっさんは階段を転げ落ちる。
「そんな台詞があんのんか？」 なくても思いは当ってる。発砲しながら家の外へ逃げるマルデンを、怒りに燃えたゲイリー・クーパーが追う。
這うように逃げるマルデンを撃って、撃って、撃って崖っぷち。倒れたマルデンを蹴り落とす。
『ゲイリー・クーパー』
マルデンの仲間たちに「殺人だっ」なんて扇動された人々が、ゲイリー・クーパーを捕え、丘の上の縛り首の木に連れて行く。
荷馬車に立たされ縄を首に巻かれたゲイリー・クーパー。馬を走らせば足場を失って木にぶら下がる。
そこへ、マリア・シェルが駆けつけて掘り出した金と金鉱の採掘権利書を暴徒に差し出す。「この女は、奴を買うつもりだ、くれてやれっ」
その声に、我先に金や権利書を奪い合う見苦しい連中は画面から消えて、ゲイリー・クーパーとマリア・シェルが見詰め合う。
此処から、主題歌の伴奏が流れ出す、おおっ、オレの好きな雰囲気。堪らんね～。

ほんの僅かな時間のなかでメロディとともに物語の完結を描写して納得させる。オレは、此れが大好きだよ。
いつまでも、いつまでも記憶に残って、思い起すたびにこころが熱くなるよ。
それが証拠に、オレは、此の映画は、何十年前に、テレビのちっこい白黒画面で一回こっきりしか観てないよ。
でも、このラストのシーンは、記憶に脈々と生き続けているよ。実際は、総天然色だったんだね。
