　As you will see from perusing the pages of this booklet, we have assembled here, in the short time since we began, a rather amazing array of teachers, scholars, artists and guest lecturers. But an educational institution is not a Hall of Fame. It is not for the fame of these people that we have brought them here.

　A university is a place of encounter. Here we encounter ideas, people and dreams that would most probably have passed us by had we not had the good fortune of coming in contact with them.

　The primary role of education is to bring young people into contact with these ideas and people. The dreams will be their own.

　When we are young, our world is limited in space and time: Our neighborhood is the whole world; this week, an age. But gradually our world grows, and time expands, back into the past. Teachers are our guides on this journey into space and time.

　Our goal at the Center for the Study of World Civilizations is to grasp the horizon of both space and time and take it as far as it will go in the imagination of the student. The horizon in the student’s imagination is, I believe, unlimited.

　If there is one thing that I would entrust the future of Japan to it is the imagination of its young people. We are here to stimulate and stretch that imagination to its limits…and beyond.

PIONEER

　pioneerは、「新分野の開拓[開発]者、草分け」「先駆者」。

○Practical Example

　“Fermi was a pioneer in the field of nuclear physics.”

　“Yes, he was one of many pioneers.”

　「フェルミは原子物理学の先駆者だった」　

　「ああ、その分野を切り拓いた人はたくさんいたが、彼もそのうちの一人だ」 　

　Enrico Fermi（1901-54）は、イタリア生まれのアメリカのの原子物理学者。1938年ノーベル物理学賞受賞。原子炉の実用化、フェルミ系統の発見、β 崩壊の理論などで知られる。

●Extra Point 　

　動詞to pioneer（「開拓する、（道路などを）開く」「（新分野を）切り開く、開拓する、……の開拓[率先]者となる」）もよく使われる。

◎Extra Example

　“Arthur C. Clarke pioneered satellite communication.”

　“Yes. He wrote about it before anybody was thinking it possible.”

　「アーサー・Ｃ・クラークは、衛星通信の分野を切り拓いた」

　「ああ、誰も具体化できると思ってなかったときに、そのことを記事にしたんだ」

TO SEDUCE

  to seduceは性的な意味でもそうでない意味でも使われる。最初は性的でない意味（魅する、引きつける）を紹介する。

○Practical Example

  “You didn’t spend 500,000 Euros on a flat in Dublin, did you, Tara?”

  “Yes. I was really stupid. I was seduced by the view of the river.” 　

　「タラ、ダブリンのマンションを買うのに50万ユーロも出さなくてよかったんじゃないの？」

　「うん、わたしはばかだったよ。川が見えるからそれに惹かれちゃったんだ」

●Extra Point 　

　では、今度は性的な意味（［人を性的に］誘惑する）で使われる用例を紹介する。

◎Extra Example

　“You didn’t sleep with Mr. Skerries, did you, Tara?”

　“I did. He seduced me when he took me out to sea on his yacht.” 　

　「タラ、あなた、スケリーズさんと寝てないよね？」

　「いえ、寝たわ。ヨットで海に連れ出してもらって、まんまとやられちゃったのよ」

AT THE VERY LEAST

　これはat least（少なくとも）を強調する表現だ。

○Practical Example

　“How much did you spend in Dublin, Tara?”

　“At the very least, 2000 Euros. I found it quite expensive.” 　

　「タラ、ダブリンではどれくらいお金を使った」　

　「最低でも2000ユーロは使っちゃたね。あそこは何をするにしてもとってもお金がかかったよ」

●Extra Point 　

　反意語は、at the very most（最高で）だ。

◎Extra Example

　“How much are you willing to spend for a flat in Dublin, Tara?”

　“At the very most, 350,000 Euros. I can’t afford any more than that.” 　

　「タラ、ダブリンでマンションを買うのにどれくらい出すつもりなの？」　

　「最高でも35万ユーロだよ。それ以上は出せない」

TO REPRODUCE

　reproduceという動詞はたくさん意味がある。一つは、「生殖する、繁殖する」「産む、繁殖させる」。

○Practical Example

　“Many years ago, people reproduced like rabbits.”

　“Not any more. Now the birth rate is really low.” 　

　「何年も前の話だが、人びとはうさぎのようにたくさん子供を産んでいた」　

　「もうそんなことはない。今の出生率は相当低い」

●Extra Point 　

　「再生させる、再現する、再び造る」の意味でも使われる。

◎Extra Example

　“I’m really nervous about the speech I have to give tonight in Sendai.”

　“Don’t worry, Kenji. Just reproduce the speech you gave last night in Ichinoseki.”

　「今夜、仙台でスピーチをするのですが、とても緊張してます」　

　「賢治君、心配するなよ。昨晩、一関で話したことをもう一度話せばいいじゃないか」

STEP-MOTHER, STEP-FATHER

　再婚する人も少なくない。子連れで再婚する人も多いから、その子供たちは「継母」（step-mother）あるいは「継父」（step-father）を持つことになる。

　このstepは、ゲルマン語源の語で、「再婚により生じた親子[兄弟姉妹]の関係で直接血縁のない……」「まま……」「義理の……」「継(けい)……」といった意味を示す。「歩み、歩(ほ)」の意味のstepとは語源が違う。

　「継母」「継父」は、状況によっては「今のお母さん」「今のお父さん」と言ってもわかってもらえるだろう。

○Practical Example

　“I love my step-mother. After my real mother died, my father remarried.”

　“You’re lucky. I hate my step-mother. I wish my dad had never remarried.” 　

　「わたしは今のお母さんが好きよ。ほんとうのお母さんは亡くなってしまって、お父さんは再婚したの」　

　「運がいいね。ぼくは今の母が嫌いだ。お父さんは再婚しなければよかった」

●Extra Point 　

　母親が再婚すれば、新しい父親、すなわち「継父」を持つことになる。　

◎Extra Example

　“My step-father is Chinese.”

　“Lucky you. He can give you free Chinese lessons every day.” 　

　「義理の父は中国人だ」　

　「うらやましい。毎日中国語がただで教えてもらえるじゃないか」

TO CONTRADICT

　動詞contradictは、二つのラテン語源の単語で成り立っている。一つはcontraで、これは「……に対して、……に反対して」という意味だ。もう一つはdictで、これは「ことばで表わす、口述する」という意味だ。dictは、dictated, dictator, dictation, あるいはdictionaryの省略形でもある。　したがって、to contradictは、「（陳述・報道などを）否認する、否定する」「反駁する」「（人の言葉に）反対する、逆らう」という意味で使われる。

○Practical Example

　“Dad, you’re wrong. The Great Wall of China wasn’t built to keep rabbits from getting into China.”

　“Shut up and don’t contradict me! Your father knows a lot about the Chinese and the trouble they had with rabbits.” 　

　「お父さんは間違っているよ。中国の万里の長城はウサギが国内に入り込むのを防ぐために作られたんじゃない」　

　「うるさい、お父さんに口答えするな！　お父さんは中国のことをよくわかっているし、あの国の人びとがウサギに困っていたことも知ってるんだ」

●Extra Point 　

　名詞形は、contradictionだ。「矛盾（すること）、相反、不両立」の意味で使われる。

◎Extra Example

　“Dad, you say you want me to choose a career for myself but you’re forcing me to be a doctor. It’s a contradiction.”

　“Shut up. It’s not a contradiction. Your father knows best what you really want to choose.” 　

　「お父さんは、どんな仕事に就くかは自分で決めなさい、というけど、医者になれ、と言う。矛盾しているよ」　

　「うるさい。矛盾なんかしてない。お父さんは、おまえがどんな仕事に就きたいか、いちばんわかっているぞ」

FREE

　freeという語は誰もが知っている。しかし、今日はこのfreeの基本的な意味を二つ学習しよう。まずは、「自由な、独立した、束縛のない」という意味で使われる用例を示す。

○Practical Example

　“I hope that the people of Iraq will someday be free.”

　“Me too, John. But the Iraqis will never be free until foreign troops leave their country.” 　

　「イラクの人たちがいつか自由になれたらいい」　

　「ジョン、わたしもそれを願っている。でも、イラクの人たちは外国の軍隊が撤退しない限り、ぜったいに自由になれないわ」 　

　「イラク人」はIraqi, イラーキ」というふうに発音される。

●Extra Point 　

　freeは、「無料［無税、免税］の」意味でも使われる。

◎Extra Example

　“If you buy one T-shirt, you get another one free.”

　“Okay, but how much is one T-shirt?” 　

　「Ｔシャツを1枚お買い上げいただくと、もう１枚無料でお付けいたします」　

　「そうですか。でも、１枚おいくらなの？」 　

　上の例文の後半部分は、you get another one for freeと言うこともできる。すなわち、freeの代わりにfor freeとすることもできるのだ。

TO CRUSH

　to crushは、文字通りの意味でも、比喩的な意味でも用いられる。まずは文字通りの意味（「（……を）押しつぶす、押し砕く」「くしゃくしゃにする」）でどんなふうに使われるか見てみよう。

○Practical Example

　“Oh, my blouse got all crushed in the suitcase. What am I going to wear tonight?”

　“Let’s go to Harrods right now, Diana, and get you a new blouse.” 　

　「ああ、スーツケースにブラウスを入れておいたら、くしゃくしゃになっちゃった。今晩何を着たらいいかしら？」　

　「ダイアナ、今からハロッズに行こう。そして新しいブラウスを買おうよ」

●Extra Point 　

　通例受身形で、「打ちひしがれる、（精神的に）打ちのめされる」という比喩的な意味でも用いられる。

◎Extra Example

　“I was crushed when I heard that my daughter, Haruna, didn’t get into the University of Tokyo.”

　“She was accepted into Japan Women’s University, so don’t be upset, Mrs. Mejiro.”

　「娘の春菜が東大に入れなかったと聞いた時は、へこんだよ」

　「日本女子大に入れたんですから、いいではないですか、目白さん」

LONELY

　lonely（孤独な、ひとりぼっちの）はlone（一人の、孤独の）から派生した。形容詞だが、末尾が-lyである語がある。lonelyもそのうちの一つ。ほかには、silly（ばかな）, kindly（やさしい）, friendly（友好的な）などがある。

○Practical Example

　“Oh, Yasue, I’m so lonely without you. Please come back to me!”

　“No, Nathan. You are a nerd, an asshole and a self-centered prick.”

　「ああ、康江、君がいないととてもさびしい。戻ってきて！」

　「いやよ、ネーサン。あなたはばかでとんなで自分勝手よ」

　prickは元々「睾丸、ペニス」を指したが、今では「いやなやつ、あほ、ろくでなし」の意味で広く用いられる。

●Extra Point 　

　どうやら康江はネーサンがあまり好きじゃないようですね。では、ここらへんで名詞形lonelinessも学習しましょう。

◎Extra Example

　“My loneliness is unbearable, Yasue. Give me one more chance!”

　“No, Nathan. No more chances. I don’t want to see you ever again!” 　

　「康江、一人でいるのは耐えられない。もう一度チャンスをくれよ！」　

　「だめよ、ネーサン。もうチャンスはないわ。二度と会いたくない」

TO REGRET

　「後悔する」（to regret）ことは誰にでもある。みなさんが後悔するのは……その日はGetUpEnglishをチェックできなかったからじゃありせんか？

○Practical Example

　“I regret eating those two pieces of cake. Now I’m so full.”

　“If you knew you would regret it, why did you eat them, Britney?” 　

　「ケーキをふた切れも食べなければよかった。もうお腹いっぱい」　

　「食べなきゃいいとわかってたなら、食べなければよかったじゃない、ブリトニー」

●Extra Point 　

　名詞形もregret（「残念、無念、遺憾」「後悔、悔恨」）．

◎Extra Example

　“I have no regrets about emailing Nathan and telling him it’s over between us.”

　“If you have no regrets, why are you crying, Yasue?”

　「ネーサンにメールして、わたしたち、もう終わりにしましょうって伝えたけど、後悔なんかしてないわ」

　「後悔してないなら、どうして泣いてるのよ、康江」

TO SPOT

　to spotは、「（……を）見つける、見抜く、見分ける、気づく」の意味で用いられる。

○Practical Example

　“Did you see Britney in Shinjuku?”

　“I spotted her as she rushed into Isetan.” 　

　「新宿でブリトニーを見た？」　

　「伊勢丹に飛び込んでいくところをちらっと見たわ」

●Extra Point 　

　to catch sight of（……を見つける）でも同じ意味を表現する。

◎Extra Example

　“Did you see Sinead in Shinjuku?”

　“I caught sight of her rushing into Mitsukoshi.”

　「新宿でシネードを見た？」　

　「三越に飛び込んでいくのを見たわ？」

MEMORY

　memoryは一つには「思い出」の意味で用いられる。memoriesと複数形で使われることもよくある。

○Practical Example

　“I have such good memories of my trip to Vietnam.”

　“The people there are so nice, aren’t they.” 　

　「ベトナム旅行はほんとうにいい思い出だ」　

　「あの国の人たちは、ほんとうに親切だね」

●Extra Point 　

　形容詞は、memorable(記憶すべき、顕著な、忘れられない).

◎Extra Example

　“My time in Vietnam was really memorable.”

　“You’re lucky to be able to spend a year there, Jack. Can I go with you next time?” 　　

　「ベトナムでの滞在が、ほんとう忘れられない」　

　「そこに1年もいられたなんて、あなたは幸せよ、ジャック。次はわたしも付いていっていい？」

DESPITE

　despiteは、「……にもかかわらず」

○Practical Example

　“Despite the heavy rain, I went walking in the mountains anyway.”

　“You are really amazing. You never give in to the rain.” 　

　「雨が強かったけど、山に出かけました」　

　「君にはほんとに驚いてしまうよ。君は決して雨に負けない人だね」

●Extra Point 　

　in spite ofでも同じ意味が表現できる。

◎Extra Example

　“In spite of the heavy rain, I still went on a walk in the mountains.”

　“And you caught a bad cold, too. You should have stayed indoors, Kenji.”

　「雨が強かったけど、山のなかをずっと歩きつづけた」　

　「だから風邪も引いてしまったんだ。賢治、おまえは家の中にいるべきだった」
