中曽根康弘元内閣総理大臣が亡くなった。11月29日（金曜日）のこと。101歳。
東京発のロイター電を読んでみた。
TOKYO (Reuters) - Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone has died at the age of 101, NHK television said on Friday, after a career during which he hobnobbed on the world stage with Ronald Reagan, and battled with bureaucrats at home to enact sweeping reforms.
But while Nakasone, prime minister from 1982 to 1987, boosted Japan’s global profile, he failed to achieve his dream of revising the country’s pacifist, U.S.-drafted constitution to clarify the ambiguous status of the military and bolster its international role.

hobnobした？ ここで思考がストップした。
自信をもって言い切れるが、生まれて初めて見る英単語である。
中曽根さんが総理の当時のことはよく覚えているが、二人の間柄は「ロン」「ヤス」関係と呼ばれた。少なくとも、中曽根総理はそう述べていた。「仲よくした」というような意味ではと考えて、辞書で調べてみた。Merriam-Webster Online Dictionaryに二つの定義が出ていた。
1. archaic: to drink sociably
2. to associate familiarly
一つ目は古風な言い回しで「社交的にお酒を飲む」、二つ目は「親しく交際する」になるだろう。Merriam-Websterには初出に関しての情報も出ていたが、シェイクスピアの「十二夜」が関係しているようだ。
今頃あちらで、レーガン元大統領とホブノブしているのだろうか。

中曽根さんは長期政権の佐藤栄作総理後を狙う政治家の1人として、三角大福中（三木武夫、田中角栄、大平正芳、福田赳夫、中曽根康弘で「さんかくだいふくちゅう」）と呼ばれた。5人とも総理大臣をつとめたが、候補としての評価順は5番目。でも、5人の中では一番の長期政権だった。なお、佐藤栄作総理大臣は安倍晋三総理大臣の大叔父（祖父・岸信介総理大臣の弟）である。

On behalf of the American people, Melania and I offer our deepest condolences to the people of Japan and to the loved ones of former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone. We were saddened to learn of his passing in Tokyo on Friday.
Prime Minister Nakasone was, in the words of President Ronald Reagan, “a friend, a wise colleague, and the leader of America’s most important partner and ally in the Pacific.” The former Prime Minister’s efforts to strengthen the United States-Japan alliance and his commitment to expanding democratic governance in Asia laid the foundation for the global partnership between the United States and Japan, which is a cornerstone of peace, prosperity, and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region and across the world.
