A New York State of Mind
僕の恩師、アフリカ系アメリカ人のJohn L. Ford教授は苦労人だ。ブルックリンから身を起こし、身ひとつで学問をたたき上げ、U of Michiganを皮切りにCornellでtenureを勝ち取った。彼と出逢ったのはCornellだった。そして彼にmaster's thesisの指導を受けた。非常に厳しい指導だった。何回かヤリあったが、結局は彼の人物力に服した。彼にとって学問とは戦いである。そんな彼のシノぎかたが僕の肌にあったのだ。
その後、Cornellでdepartment headを勤め上げた後、Emory UniversityのSenior Vice President and Dean of Campus Lifeとして転出し今に至っている。オバマ大統領の選出を受け、恩師の胸に去来したものはいくばくのものだったのだろうか。
ちょっと前に、その恩師からメールをもらった。A New York State of Mindが遠くから聞こえてくる感じがした。

I am very happy to hear from you that you are successful in your new position at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. I agree with you that it will be exciting to see future health care reform initiates of the new president. I am not optimistic about these changes happening quickly because of the worsening economy in the U.S.
I you come to the U. S. I hope you can come to visit me at Emory University. I will plan to visit you the next time I am in Japan.
