英語便のサービスのすばらしさについては、これまで何度も紹介してきた。

そして最近は英和翻訳に加えて、日英翻訳の仕事も激増しているので、一般向けのサービスではないが、個人的に契約を結んで「日英英訳」のチェックもしてもらっている。
GetUpEnglishでは、今日から3日間、この英語便のネイティブ添削のすばらしさを、改めてご紹介したい。
機会があって、宮下奈都『遠くの声に耳を澄ませて』（新潮文庫）の巻頭の一編「アンデスの声」の一節を英訳した。
その街は古代から栄えた都市で、赤道直下にあるのに、標高が高いため暑くもなく寒くもない。一年中気温が安定していて、晴れた日には富士と見紛う美しい山がそびえている。めずらしい鳥が飛び交い、鮮やかな花が咲き乱れ、木々には大きな実がなっている。祖父はまるで見てきたかのように街の様子を話し、幼かった私は夢中で聞いた。その街の澄んだ空気を胸いっぱいに吸った気がする。
これを自分は以下のように訳した。
The city had flourished since ancient times, and even though it was located just south of the equator, it was neither too hot nor too cold, being at a high altitude. The temperature was stable all year round, and against the clear skies towered a beautiful mountain that could have been mistaken for Mount Fuji. Rare birds flew around(→about), colorful flowers bloomed everywhere, and large red fruit hung ripe on the trees. Grandfather spoke of it as if he had gone there and seen it for himself, and as a child, I was absorbed in listening to his story. I remembered(→felt like) I had filled my lungs with the clear air from that city.
原文は現在形になっているが、基本は過去形なので、英語ではやはり過去形にする必要があり、語っているそれ以前のものについては過去完了形にするのが自然だと思う。
これに対して、赤にした3つの表現について、英語便のネイティブ・スピーカーから次のアドバイスをもらった。
around: You might want to change this to "about" in order to avoid the similar sounds of "all year round" and "flew around." In English, we often try to avoid repetitious sounds, as it can distract the readers' attention away from the content.
hung: You need a verb to explain the connection to the fruit and the trees. You could say "large red fruit ripened on the trees," but in my mind "hung ripe" makes it seem like the land is really fertile, which is the impression I get from the original text.
remembered: It sounds odd to say "remembered" since this is not a memory that actually happened. "Felt like" sounds better, and since the original is 気がする I think it is more appropriate.
どれも非常に適切なコメントで大変参考になる。
aroundのところにあるように、「繰り返し」（repetition） を避けるべきということはいつも注意しているつもりだが、こうやって指摘されると自分の癖が改めてわかり、大変ありがたい。
hungに関する指摘は日本語の原文から判断した上での非常にするどいコメントで驚かされた。このよううに、日英比較の視点もアドバイスしてもらえることがよくある。
rememberedとfelt likeの違いなど、ネイティブ感覚から説明してもらえるのでありがたい。こういう添削を受けられるのは英語便だけだ。
このように英語便にはすぐれたネイティブがそろっていて、ユーザーの英文を懇切丁寧に添削してくれる上に、上に示したようなコメントもつけてもらえる。
すべての英語学習者にお勧めしたい。
