　お正月の帰省で、嬉々として故郷へ戻る人達、父母や古い友人達との再会を懐かしく悦び合い、話が弾むことだろう。今年はガソリンが安くなったから、車で帰省する人が増えるのだろうか。まずは、旅のご安全を祈る次第。

　私らが２０代の頃、森山良子さんの歌うフォークソングに聴き惚れた。その中に、＜思い出のグリーングラス＞がある。北海道の片田舎に帰省する時、駅頭に父母や恋人が姿を見せる事は無かったが（笑）、夏冬に構わずこの歌を一人口ずさんでいたものだ。

　帰省するのは、森山良子さんの歌では若い女性、でも元歌では男性である。駅頭で迎えてくれる優しい父母、駅への道を駆け寄って来る金髪のメアリー、彼女の愛らしいさくらんぼのような唇・・・。大好きなメアリーと並んで歩む故郷の道の懐かしさ。全てが彼を心地良く迎えてくれるのだ。

　だが、４連以下台詞 [spoken] の部分を聞くと、これは死刑囚が故郷へ戻った夢を見ていて目覚めた内容であることが分かる。そして、屈強なガードマンと老いた神父が彼の腕を取ってゆっくりと進んで行く・・・

　懐かしい故郷の皆が、私に会うため再び集まってくれる、それは私が昔遊んだ樫の木陰に埋葬されるためなのだと彼は寂しく語る。

　繰り返し述べられる good to touch the green, green grass of home のフレーズに、作者が故郷を愛惜している気持がこめられており、トム・ジョーンズは情感豊かにそれを歌う。彼の発音は、極めて分かり易い。

　日本語歌詞の作成者山上路夫氏は、曲の雰囲気を保ちつつ、元歌とは異なる明るいウェスターン調の歌へ巧みに変えてしまった。森山さんの伸び伸びとした歌唱を聴いていると、遥かな昔を懐かしく想い出させてくれる。
