政治や宗教、国際問題などを題材にした挑発的な風刺画で知られる「シャルリー・エブド」。偶像崇拝が禁止されているイスラム教では、ムハンマドの顔を書くことはタブー視されているが、シャルリーは例外なく扱ってきた。
過激派はこうした姿勢に憤っていたようで、2011年11月には事務所に火炎瓶が投げ込まれる事件も発生している。2015年1月7日に起きた襲撃事件の原因も風刺画とみられており、これによって著名な風刺漫画家4人を含む12人が命を落とした。
過激派ではなくても、ムハンマドの風刺画を目にすることは一般的なイスラム教徒にとってもいい気持ちはしない、と思われる。ところが1月9日の「めざましテレビ」では、シャルリーが過去に掲載した風刺画数点を手にした番組スタッフが日本にいるイスラム教徒に感想を聞く様子が放送された。
1人目の男性は、火炎瓶事件時に発表された風刺画を見せられた。ムハンマドが「ゲスト編集長」として描かれ、「笑い死にしなければ、むち打ち100回だ！」と笑いながらコメントしているものだ。これに男性は感想を述べることなく、苦笑しながら首をひねった。
別の風刺画を提示された2人目の男性も「私あれ、わかんないからちょっと...」と言い、顔をしかめるのみ。唯一しっかりコメントした3人目の男性は「ムハンマドはすごいえらい人ですよ。やっぱりそういう馬鹿にされないほうがいいじゃないですか？」と最初は饒舌に話したものの、「こんなこと（風刺画にするようなこと）やっちゃって、そういうのは絶対だめですよ、本当に...」に最終的には神妙な表情で語った。
「反吐が出るような残酷な行為」「卑劣極まりない」
放送直後、インターネット上には「目を疑ったわ」などと違和感を示す声があがった。あるツイッターユーザーが
「さっきフジテレビが、ムハンマドの戯画を掲載したシャルリ・エブド紙の表紙を、在日のムスリムの方々に無理やり見せて感想を聞くという反吐が出るような残酷な行為をやっていた。当然、どの方も目を背けていらしたが、フジは、自分たちがどれほど彼らの心を踏み躙ったかわかっているのか？」
と投稿すると注目を集め、14日15時時点で3700回以上リツイートされている。このツイートを受け、
「当該の戯画がムスリムの怒りの対象となっていることを承知しているだけに卑劣極まりない」
「フジテレビ報道局内に止める人や疑問を差し挟む人はいなかったの...」
などとフジテレビを批判する声がいくつも上がった。
フジテレビ広報部はJ-CASTニュースの取材に対し「この件に関して、弊社に意見や問い合わせは、今のところ一切寄せられていません」と説明し、放送内容については
「フランスのテロ事件という大きなニュースにおいて、容疑者が動機として言及している風刺画について、イスラム教徒の方々がどのように受け止めているかは、公共性公益性の高いテーマであると考えています」
「宗教を風刺することに対してのお考えに一人一人差があることを想定し、取材対象者の方に、取材の前にその趣旨や目的について時間をかけて説明し、ご理解を十分に得た上で取材に応じていただいたものです」
とコメントした。
なお「シャルリー・エブド」は12日（現地時間）、メディア向けに次号（14日発売）の表紙を公開した。「すべては許される」というメッセージのもと、ムハンマドが「Je Suis Charlie（私はシャルリー）」というカードを掲げながら涙を流す様子が描かれた風刺画だ。複数の報道によると、最新号は通常の50倍にあたる300万部の印刷となるという。
