On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers flew the first airplane ever at 6.8 mph (10.9 km/h). Only 61 years and five days later, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird took off. It's still the world's fastest airplane with a speed of 2,193 mph (3,530 km/h.) This fascinating video explains its top secret engine technology.

1903年12月17日、ライト兄弟が人類初の有人飛行に成功したとき、その速度は時速10.9km（6.8マイル）でした。
そのわずか61年+5日後に空に飛び立ったロッキードのSR-71ブラックバードは、時速3,530 km（2,193マイル）。未だに世界最速の飛行機です。
マッハ3を駆動するエンジンは、プラット・アンド・ホイットニー製J58です。SR-71には2基搭載しており、クイーン・メリー号のエンジン以上の馬力が出ます。
これは地上テストでアフターバーナーをフル稼働中の写真なんですが、ご覧のように、超音速噴射の気圧と外気の気圧の差で生じる「ショック・ダイアモンド（マッハ・ディスク）」が写ってますよ。

人間というやつは、いやはやすさまじいわ。もっと信じられないのは、51年後の今に至るまで（ブラックバードの処女飛行は米時間1963年12月22日）未だにこのスピードを超えられていないことです。一瞬の爆速より巡航速度重視になったということもありますが。それにしたって51年ですよ…信じがたいものがあります。
