オリンピックの戦いを終え、ストックホルムから帰国する金栗四三（中村勘九郎・演）。明治天皇が崩御し（日露戦争の英雄・乃木希典大将夫婦が殉死）、元号が明治から大正に移り、四三は人々の空気が変わったように感じられる。
報告会で大勢の東京高等師範学校（高師）の仲間が四三の健闘をたたえる中、敗北を問いただす女性が出現する。
永井道明（杉本哲太・演）の弟子・二階堂トクヨ（寺島しのぶ・演）である。
二階堂は高師の近くの東京女子師範学校（のちのお茶の水女子大学）の教師でもある。
永井と二階堂は、オリンピックでの敗北を受けて、娯楽スポーツではなく、強靭（じん）な肉体を作る体育の推進を改めて主張する。
同じ頃、美濃部孝蔵（森山未來・演）は四三とは逆に旅だとうとしていた。
師匠の円喬は「美濃部くんには”フラ”がある」という。
円喬（松尾スズキ・演）とは別の噺（はなし）家について、地方を回るのだ。
新橋駅から出発する日。師匠に見限られたと落ち込み汽車に乗る美濃部孝蔵（のちの古今亭志ん生）のもとに、師匠の円喬が駆けつけて……。
いよいよ、来週は春野スヤ役の綾瀬はるかと、金栗四三役の中村勘九郎が結婚する。
また、新章突入で、今後は女子スポーツ、箱根駅伝、女子スポーツのパイオニア・人見絹枝（菅野小春・演）なども登場する。これで少しは視聴率を稼げるのか？
くだらなくはない。面白い。だが、この大河ドラマ『いだてん～東京オリムピック噺～』は”素人受け”がしない。登場人物が小粒で、無名。今までの、坂本龍馬、高杉晋作、西郷隆盛、織田信長、上杉謙信、武田信玄、徳川家康、源義経、明智光秀……誰でも知るひとはでない。
だから、予想できなくて未知で面白いのだ。もう少しで、きっと面白くなる。きっと。
