お久しぶりです
２０日から２４日までシンガポールに行ってきました。今日はシンガポールの歴史を少しだけ紹介したいと思います。
シンガポールはマレー半島の南端に位置する、淡路島ほどの小さな島国。
日本からだと、福岡空港から約６～７時間ほどでシンガポールの東端にあるチャンギ空港に到着します。７世紀から１３世紀にかけては、インドネシアに首都を置く王国の支配下にあり、１４世紀にこの小さな島でスマトラの王子がライオンらしき動物を見つけたことから、サンスクリット語で「ライオンの都市」を意味する「シンガプーラ（シンガ＝ライオン・プーラ＝都市）」という名前が付けられたそうです。しかし実際にはシンガポールにライオンは生息しておらず、王子が見たのはトラだったのではないかという疑惑があるらしい
。
１８１９年にイギリスのラッフルズ卿が上陸して以来、名前は「シンガポール」となり、東インド会社のアジア貿易拠点の一つとして発展し、現在のシンガポールの原型が形成されました。１９４２年にはイギリス軍を打ち破った日本がこの島を占領し、「シンガポール」という名前は一時失われ、「昭南島」と名付けられました。１９４５年に日本が敗戦してからは再びイギリス領となり、名前も「シンガポール」に戻りますが、１９５９年にはマレーシア自治州となります。シンガポールが「シンガポール共和国」として独立したのは、ちょうど４０年前の１９６５年のことです。
恥ずかしい話ですが、この旅行に行くまでシンガポールが日本の占領下にあったことを全く知りませんでした。もう少し歴史的背景を勉強していけばよかったなぁとちょっと反省。

I went to Singapore from 20th to 24th. Today I will tell you a little bit about the history of Singapore.
Singapore is a small island which is located at the southest of the Malay Peninsula. The island is about the same size as Awaji-shima in Japan. It takes about 6-7 hours from Fukuoka Airport to Changi Airport.
The country was under the control of the kingdom whose capital was in Indonesia from 7th century to 13th century. In 14th century, the prince of Sumatra discovered an animal like a lion and named the country "Singapura" which is a Sanskrit word for "Lion City." But actually lion does not live in Singapore so he probably saw a tiger.
In 1819, Thomas Stamford Raffles from Britain landed the country and made it one of the important stronghold of Asian Trade. Then the name was changed from "Singapura" to "Singaore." From 1942 to 1945, Japan conquered Singapore and named "Shonan island（昭南島）" in Japanese. After the war Singapore became British territory again and in1959 it became a self-govering state of Malysia. In 1965, Singapore became independent as the Republic of Singapore.
I've never known the fact that Japan once conquered Singapore during the war. I should have studied more about the history of Singapore before I went there.
