Icelandic Hay Awaiting Export
Icelandic farmers are still waiting for the Norwegian Food Safety Authority to set conditions for the export of hay to Norway. Icelandic farmers have shown great interest in supplying their Norwegian counterparts with hay, following a period of severe drought in Norway.
How much can be exported depends on conditions made by Norwegian authorities, but according to Sindri Sigurgeirsson, head of the Association of Icelandic Farmers, tens of thousands of bales of hay could be exported.
Sigurgeir Hreinsson, CEO of the Eyjafjörður Agriculture Association, states it is urgent to find out soon what conditions the Norwegians set. Hay is normally harvested twice a year, but since more hay is in stock now than in most years, farmers wonder whether to fertilize the fields for a second harvest, should they not be able to sell the hay. “They even expect to discard it,” he adds.
No formal procedures are in place about the transport of hay between the two countries, since Denmark and Sweden usually step in when Norway lacks hay. That, however, is not an option now, for they, too, have been plagued by a severe drought.
A common requirement for the transport of hay between countries, according to Sindri, is that the hay be harvested from fields not used for grazing and not fertilized with livestock manure.
