Residents in Northern states of the US have been told to stay indoors and not to breathe heavily whilst outdoors.

The warning comes as temperatures have plummeted to a staggering -20C in Chicago, whilst the coldest seen on Wednesday was in Norris Camp in Minnesota, were temperatures plummeted to -40C.

The deadly weather conditions is being caused by a polar vortex which is sweeping across the country.

In scenes from a Hollywood movie, the city of Chicago saw its river freeze, whilst ice formed all across the city.

It is expected that the weather will get worse in the city as temperatures are expected to drop as low as -28C.

Meanwhile in Minnesota, the deadly cold combined with wind child has seen temperatures feel like -50C.

The public have been warned not to venture outdoors unless its absolutely necessary and if they do they must not stay outdoors for too long.

２０１９年１月３０日（Wed.） 雨が少なくて、畑の作物への水遣りが気になっています。但し、明日は雪か雨が期待出来そうなので、多少は安心。 それにしても、今冬も降雨が少ないように思います（愛知県平野部）。

アイルランド水道当局によると、水位の低下によって、Athlone において、夜間の給水制限が導入されることになります。



Irish Water have issued a public notice to people living in the Athlone area as water supplies will be restricted overnight.

According to the state utility, water restrictions will be in place from 10pm until 6am.

Irish Water say the restrictions are being imposed due to low levels following a pollution issue.

The restrictions are expected to affect those living in the following areas: Baylin, The Ories, Mount Temple, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Killyon Hill, Blyry Bonavalley, Athlone

降雨量が不足していることに起因しているのでしょう。 日本でも、関東地域の降雨ゼロ期間が、かなり長くなっているとの報道も先日ありました。 一方で、南半球のオーストラリアでは記録的な猛暑が伝えられていました。

これらは、地球温暖化や気候変動の影響であると考えることが適切なのではないでしょうか。

ちょうど一週間前の１月２３日の当ブログの話題にもあるように、高校生たちが始めた "Fridays For Future." と言う活動等をキッカケにして、一般市民も持続可能な社会・世界の構築をさらに意識して行きたいものです。

関連して、自然エネルギーや再生可能エネルギーの活用も広げるべきですが、だからと言って、金儲け主義を優先し、自然環境を破壊するなどの方法による無節操なソーラーパネル設置などは、絶対に行ってはなりません。

金儲け最優先ではなく、持続可能な社会作りを優先したいものです、子供達や未来の為に。

２０１９年１月２９日（Tue.） 唐突ですが、「問うに落ちず語るに落ちる」と言う言葉がありますが、中国語では「不打自招（ bu4 da3 zi4 zhao1 ）（打たれもしないのに自分から白状する）と言うそうです。
で、話は切り替わりますが、今年の春節は、ちょうど１週間後の２月５日になっています。 中国本土では、今週末から“民族大移動”が始まることでしょう。 また、日本でも見られるかどうか知りませんが、大晦日（２月４日）の夜には恒例の「春晩」（日本の紅白歌合戦のような感じのTV番組）があります。 中国中央テレビ（中国中央電視台： CCTV ）のサイトを探して、そこから番組を視聴出来るかもしれません。 以前は、私も観たことがあります。中国文化や中国語などに興味がある方は楽しみにしているかも知れませんね。

アイスランド南部で、鷲が通常とは異なる行動を見せています。

Two eagles were spotted flying around in circles over the town of Hveragerði in South Iceland on Saturday for around half an hour. Zoologist Kristinn Haukur Skarphéðinsson says that this behaviour is unusual.

"There are eagles in many areas of South Iceland and have been spotted this winter and eagles often dwell in these parts during the winter."

He explains that the birds like this area because of the geothermal water and open spaces, with plenty of fish and ducks which they can hunt.

The eagles were flying just above the Hveragerði convalescence home and were observed by patients. "We all watched the display and talked about it. It was quite spectactular to see. Other birds disappeared at the same time, scared of these huge predatory birds," said Guðjón Jensson, a patient who spoke with mbl.is.

やはり、動物たちは、自然な環境の中で生きるのが望ましいスタイルでしょう。狭い檻や柵などに囲まれた自由を制約された環境ではなく・・・です。

なので、都会にある “動物園” なるものは、基本的に好みません。個人的には。 動物を観たければ、そうした場所に自分で足を運ぶのが本来の姿だろうと思います。

Four young men have been confirmed dead following a road crash in West Donegal tonight.
The single-vehicle crash involving a car occurred at a bridge at Meenaclady between Gaoth Dobhair and Gortahork.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident, which happened before 9pm. It is not yet known how the crash happened.
The area has been sealed off and preserved for a full technical examination. All four of those who died are from the West Donegal area.
The names of the young men will not be released until all family members have been notified.
A Garda source confirmed: “Four young people have died as a result of the crash. There was only one car involved.
“It’s a devastating scene. All four lads are from the locality and would be well-known in the area.” The scene of the crash is close to where a number of other fatal incidents have taken place over the years.

’Appalling loss of life’
The incident comes at the end of a week in which six people had already lost their lives on Irish roads – a toll described by the Road Safety Authority as “an appalling loss of life”.
A woman in her 70s died after she was hit by a car in Bangor, Co Down, on Saturday night. The woman died at the scene in Ballyholme. On Friday two people were killed, while three had died on Thursday. This brings to 10 the total of persons who have died on Irish roads in just a four-day period.
Shortly after 6pm on Friday, a man and a woman in their 70s died after their car left the road in Co Monaghan and ended up in a bog.
The single car crash occurred near the Monaghan and Armagh border at Killyneil Cross.
On Thursday, at about 6.50pm, a male pedestrian in his 40s died after he was struck by a 4x4 vehicle on the Dublin Road in Monasterevin in Co Kildare. He was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Jackie Griffin from Tallaght was killed in a fatal collision with a truck at about 11.30am on the M50 in Dublin on Thursday morning.
Also on Thursday, an 80-year-old woman was killed in a collision between two vehicles at Kilrickle, Loughrea, Co Galway at about 9am.

ところで、多少関連することですが、マナーについて： 例えば、手動式ドアを開けて建物内に入ったり、又は、出たりする場合、後続の人がいないかどうかを振り返って見ているでしょうか（自動ドアの場合は別として）。 数m以内に後続の人がいる場合は、ドアを手で開けた状態にしてあげます（老若男女問わずに待ちます）。 私の場合はドイツやデンマークに滞在した時、こうしたマナーや習慣が身に付きました。 日本では、あまり見かけないような気がしていますが、私は今でも実践しています。

Employees at the Hvaleyrarvöllur golf course in Hafnarfjörður arrived to an usual site on Friday, RÚV reports: naturally formed rolls of snow all over the frozen green.

According to meteorologist Óli Þór Árnason, such rolls form through a unique combination of specific weather conditions. On Thursday, he explained, it snowed, and then the temperature rose by one or two degrees and little drops of rain fell over the golf course. When that happened, the top layer of the snow got wet, right as the wind kicked up, and that’s how the rolls were shaped.

“It’s a bit of a coincidence—everything needs to happen at the same time,” he said. “[H]umidity and wind, in order for [the snow] to start rolling itself.”

形を見た時、ドイツで見かけたロール状に象られた牧草を思い浮かべました。 何か、良いことの兆しかもしれません。 根拠はありませんが、そう思いたい・・・と言うことです。
