　例年に比べて今年の冬は暖かいようだが、それでも街にはマスクをかけた人が少なくない。本格的な風邪の季節を迎えようとしている折、ネット上で話題になっているのが医者の風邪対策だ。

　ある調査によると、勤務医のうち風邪の際に薬を「必ず服用する」と答えたのはわずか１３％という。薬に頼るよりも自然の治癒力で風邪を撃退するほうが効果的というのだが、これって正しい選択なのか。

「風邪の予防や治療に風邪薬が効くというのは単なる気休め。たとえ医者に処方された薬でもそれほど効きません」と言うのは医学博士の米山公啓氏だ。風邪の治療法には“常識のウソ”が存在するのである。

「風邪をひいたら薬を飲めばいいという考えがまず間違い。それよりも仕事を休むことが重要です。体が風邪のウイルスと闘っているため、睡眠をたっぷり取って免疫力を高めたほうが回復は早いのです。食欲があれば食事を取る。その場合、ごはんやパンなどのでんぷん質のほうが免疫力のエネルギーになります」


　昔から、卵酒やショウガ、ビタミンＣなどを取れば回復が早いといわれるが、これは根拠がないそうだ。

「大切なのは体を温めること。体が冷えると免疫力が落ち、体内でウイルスが増殖してしまうからです。日本では風邪をひいたら風呂に入るなといいますが、これは俗説にすぎません。むしろ入浴で体を温め、そのまま布団に入ったほうが治りが早い。高熱で苦しいときは解熱剤が効きますが、そけい部や脇の下、首などを冷やすのも効果的。会社を休み、“これで治る”と自分に言い聞かせることで風邪を治す人もいます。気持ちを前向きにすることで免疫力を高めているのです。ストレスを抱えたままでは、なかなか治りません」（米山公啓氏）

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (Bloomberg) -- The Renault-Nissan Alliance said today it plans to offer 10 vehicles with autonomous drive technology in four years.

The alliance made the announcement today as Carlos Ghosn, who is CEO of both companies, was meeting with reporters at Nissan’s Silicon Valley research center.

Renault-Nissan will also launch an app for mobile devices this year that allows users to interact remotely with their cars, such as by controlling music or the car's temperature.

By 2018, Ghosn said the alliance will start selling vehicles with "multiple-lane control," meaning they can autonomously change lanes on highways and navigate heavy traffic. By 2020, the alliance will have cars that can drive through city intersections and heavy city traffic on their own.

With the announcement, Ghosn is joining a parade of automakers and technology companies racing to be among the first to offer automated driving. Tesla Motors Inc. in October rolled out its Autopilot suite that can drive on well-tended highways and change lanes without the driver taking the wheel. General Motors will offer its similar Super Cruise technology on the 2017 Cadillac CT6.



Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Ford Motor Co. are discussing working together on self-driving technologies, said a person familiar with the talks. Ride-sharing company Uber Technologies Inc. is investing in self-driving technology, while smaller rival Lyft Inc. is working with GM, a recent investor.

Potential benefits include reducing traffic accidents and congestion and allowing people to use the time in transit for activities other than driving.

In a study released on Monday, New York-based McKinsey & Co. predicted that by 2030, one in 10 cars may be fully self- driving, and one in seven could be purchased by ride-sharing services.

In another announcement, Renault-Nissan said it hired tech industry executive Ogi Redzic to lead its connected car initiatives. Redzic, 45, was named alliance senior vice president, connected vehicles and mobility services, effective immediately.

He joins the alliance after positions at Nokia, NAVTEQ, Motorola, and at wireless communication startup cyberPIXIE, the alliance said in a statement. He most recently served as senior vice president, automotive at Nokia HERE, where he led the company's automotive business group.

自動運転車をめぐっては、テスラが昨年10月に走行や車線変更を整備された高速道路で運転手のハンドル操作なしに自動で行える「オートパイロット」機能の提供を開始。ＧＭも2017年にキャデラック「ＣＴ６」に同様の機能搭載を目指すなど各社がしのぎを削っており、日産とルノーもこの競争に加わる格好だ。

　最近では「スー女」（相撲好き女性）などという言葉も登場するなど、再び相撲ブームになっている。

　10日からは2016年の初場所が開催されるので、相撲ファンは楽しみにしている方も多いかもしれない。

　相撲というと一見巨体がぶつかり合う力の戦いに思えそうだが、実際はそうではない。技術面から相撲の見方を解説した世界初の本『世界初の相撲の技術の教科書』（ベースボール・マガジン社）を上梓した明治大学教授であり自身も全国学生相撲選手権準優勝の経歴を持つ桑森真介氏はこう語る。


桑森真介氏●明治大学教授。医学博士。学生時代には明治大学相撲部に在籍し、全国学生相撲選手権大会個人2位、団体優勝。
「近年、大型の力士が増えたこともあって確かにパワー勝負が多くなった感はありますが、実際は立ち合いから様々な技術が駆使されており、合理的な動きが勝負を制する世界なんです」

　そんな中、勝負だけではなく、その鍛錬法の合理性にも注目が集まっている。

「実は相撲選手はあれだけぶつかり合うスポーツであるにもかかわらず、アメフトやラグビーなどと比べると頚椎損傷の比率が非常に低いんです。なぜそうなのかはまだはっきりとはしていませんが、相撲のぶつかり稽古が頚椎損傷を防ぐ筋肉の補強などに役立っているのではと考えられています」

　そして、相撲といえばなんといっても四股。

「正しい四股は大腿四頭筋、ハムストリング、大殿筋、中殿筋、さらには腹筋にも効果があるエクササイズです」

　大殿筋、中殿筋といえばヒップアップにも効有効である。

　だがしかし、ジムならばともかく、オフィスで仕事の合間に手軽に……というわけにはいかない。それに何より、きちんと四股を踏むのは結構難しいものだ。

「そんな人に勧めたいのは『腰割り』というトレーニングです」

　腰割りとは、両足を肩幅より広めに開き、爪先を外に向け、背筋を伸ばした状態で、大腿部が水平で膝が90度になるくらい（腰と膝の高さが同じになるくらい）までゆっくり下げるという動作のこと。柔軟性がないと難しいが、四股を踏むよりは手軽に行うことが可能だ。

「筑波大学の白木仁先生の研究では、30～50歳の運動経験がない男女8名を対象に、腰割りを1日10回目安に3か月実施してもらったところ股関節が柔らかく、なめらかに動くようになり、それに伴い脚筋力、バランス能力および反復横跳びなどの運動機能が向上し、体重や体脂肪率が減少したという結果が出ました。座りっぱなしで仕事をする人は股関節が固くなりがちです。腰割りはこうした固くなった股関節を柔軟にするために最適なエクササイズなんです」

　相撲ブームの今。単に観戦するだけでは勿体無い。伝統に裏打ちされた鍛錬法をオフィスでもできるエクササイズとして取り入れてみてはいかがだろう？

ワールドカップといってもちょっとマイナーなラグビーだ。フランスは今年の６ヵ国で優勝。８月末に前回王者のイングランドとの親善試合にも勝ち波に乗っているが、テレビを見ていたら、フランス選手の中で長髭長髪のナンバー８のセバスチャン・シャバル（２９才、１９２cm１１５kg）そんなに大きくはないが、長髭を振り回し長髪をなびかせて弾丸のようにするす姿は確かに目立つ。あだ名は「弾丸」から"Jesus Christ"など。「ウエーウエー行け、シャバル」「激突だ、シャバル!」とシャバルマニアも増えてるそうだ。　
日本の大学生もシャバル髭シャバル髪いいんじゃないかなぁ。



②セバスチャン・シャバル引退　―オールブラックスが恐れたただ１人の男―

　パン屋でバゲットを渡してくれるかわいい店員さんも、公園のベンチで数独に励んでいるおばあちゃんも、週末にサッカーボールを追いかけているガキどもも、どんなにラグビーに興味のない人間でも、フランスでは誰もがセバスチャン・シャバルの名前と顔を知っている。フランスでワールドカップが開催された２００７年には、当時保健・青年・スポーツ相だったロズリン・バシュローが、「そうね、間違いなく私も『シャバルマニア』の１人ね。有罪を認めるわ。でも、彼を『お大臣のお気に入り』ってからかうフランス代表のチームメイトにはいいネタでしょ」と笑って打ち明けるほどだった。イギリスのセール・シャークスでプレーしていた彼に与えられたあだ名は「Caveman」（直訳では「穴居人」だが、「原始人」のイメージの方が日本人にはしっくりくる）。大会中は、その名の通りのロン毛（おしゃれな意味ではまったくない。ただ伸ばしっぱなしのボサボサ髪）と顔中を覆おうかという髭面のシャバルの変装をしたサポーターがスタジアムに溢れ、シャバルマニアなる言葉まで生まれる一大現象となった。

　その人気を爆発させる契機となったのが、２００７年夏、ワールドカップ直前のフランス代表ニュージーランド遠征。トップ１４の決勝とテストマッチの第２戦が重なったことから、決勝に参加する大半の代表選手を欠きニュージーランドの現地メディアに「フランスＣ」と揶揄されたチームの中で孤軍奮闘。シャバルの代名詞であるハードタックルでナンバーエイトのクリス・マソエをKOすると、タックルに来た当時世界最高のロックの１人と言われていたアリ・ウィリアムズをはじき飛ばしその顎を逆に粉砕。しばしのストロー生活を余儀なくさせた。そのビデオはユーチューブで３３０万回以上も再生される大ヒットを記録（https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uh_aWqm2I0）。

全世界にシャバルの名前がそのルックスとともに知れ渡ることになった。
