 最近では「スー女」(相撲好き女性)などという言葉も登場するなど、再び相撲ブームになっている。

 10日からは2016年の初場所が開催されるので、相撲ファンは楽しみにしている方も多いかもしれない。

 相撲というと一見巨体がぶつかり合う力の戦いに思えそうだが、実際はそうではない。技術面から相撲の見方を解説した世界初の本『世界初の相撲の技術の教科書』(ベースボール・マガジン社)を上梓した明治大学教授であり自身も全国学生相撲選手権準優勝の経歴を持つ桑森真介氏はこう語る。


桑森真介氏●明治大学教授。医学博士。学生時代には明治大学相撲部に在籍し、全国学生相撲選手権大会個人2位、団体優勝。
「近年、大型の力士が増えたこともあって確かにパワー勝負が多くなった感はありますが、実際は立ち合いから様々な技術が駆使されており、合理的な動きが勝負を制する世界なんです」

 そんな中、勝負だけではなく、その鍛錬法の合理性にも注目が集まっている。

「実は相撲選手はあれだけぶつかり合うスポーツであるにもかかわらず、アメフトやラグビーなどと比べると頚椎損傷の比率が非常に低いんです。なぜそうなのかはまだはっきりとはしていませんが、相撲のぶつかり稽古が頚椎損傷を防ぐ筋肉の補強などに役立っているのではと考えられています」

 そして、相撲といえばなんといっても四股。

「正しい四股は大腿四頭筋、ハムストリング、大殿筋、中殿筋、さらには腹筋にも効果があるエクササイズです」

 大殿筋、中殿筋といえばヒップアップにも効有効である。

 だがしかし、ジムならばともかく、オフィスで仕事の合間に手軽に……というわけにはいかない。それに何より、きちんと四股を踏むのは結構難しいものだ。

「そんな人に勧めたいのは『腰割り』というトレーニングです」

 腰割りとは、両足を肩幅より広めに開き、爪先を外に向け、背筋を伸ばした状態で、大腿部が水平で膝が90度になるくらい(腰と膝の高さが同じになるくらい)までゆっくり下げるという動作のこと。柔軟性がないと難しいが、四股を踏むよりは手軽に行うことが可能だ。

腰割り
肩幅より広めに足を開いて立ち、背筋は伸ばす

腰割り
背筋を伸ばしたまま腰を下げて腰と膝の高さが同じになるくらいまでゆっくり下げる。これを10回ほど繰り返す

「筑波大学の白木仁先生の研究では、30~50歳の運動経験がない男女8名を対象に、腰割りを1日10回目安に3か月実施してもらったところ股関節が柔らかく、なめらかに動くようになり、それに伴い脚筋力、バランス能力および反復横跳びなどの運動機能が向上し、体重や体脂肪率が減少したという結果が出ました。座りっぱなしで仕事をする人は股関節が固くなりがちです。腰割りはこうした固くなった股関節を柔軟にするために最適なエクササイズなんです」

 相撲ブームの今。単に観戦するだけでは勿体無い。伝統に裏打ちされた鍛錬法をオフィスでもできるエクササイズとして取り入れてみてはいかがだろう?
