昨日のオンライン講座「英語で歌うポピュラーソング」課題曲は、「Those were the Days（悲しき天使）」。
『Those were the Days』（ゾーズ・ワー・ザ・デイズ）は、イギリス（ウェールズ）の女性歌手メリー・ホプキン（Mary Hopkin/1950- ）が1968年8月にリリースした楽曲。邦題は『悲しき天使』。
ポール・マッカートニーのプロデュースにより、ビートルズのアップル・レコード第1号アーティストして、ホプキンは同曲でメジャーデビューを果たした。
『Those were the Days』の原曲は、20世紀前半頃のロシア歌曲『長い道を』。

アメリカの男性歌手ジーン・ラスキン（Gene Raskin）がこの原曲をアレンジしてロンドンのブルー・エンジェル・クラブで歌っていたところを、ポール・マッカートニーが偶然耳にしたという。
