Charting the success of the 48′s

As I’ve previously wrote in a few articles, Japan’s music scene is currently dominated by the *48 Family. This being AKB48, SKE48 and NMB48. In 3 of the last 4 weeks, each group has decisively taken the number 1 spot in the Oricon chart. First SKE48 with Kataomoi Finally, then 2 weeks later NMB48 with Junjou U-19, followed by AKB48 claiming the top spot last week with Give me five. Seeing this, I’ve decided to make some charts to show each groups singles history, so we can see how each has grown.
First up, AKB48, the original group from Akihabara, Tokyo.
This is a modified version of the chart produced for a previous article.
As we can see, when they first launched it took them several years before they were able to hit their stride. Ever since then, their rise has been largely unimpeded. Ever since the release of River, all of their singles have taken the number one spot. All of their last six singles have been million sellers. Their sales average has almost doubled for each of the last three years. While their current single didn’t match the heights of some of last years singles, their overall average sales are still trending upwards.
Next up SKE48, from Sakae City in Nagoya.
SKE48 didn’t find immediate success either. It took them a few singles to find their feet; admittedly less than AKB48 did, but then they had their success to build upon. They finally landed the coveted number one spot with their fifth single Banzai Venus. Even though they only sell half as many singles as their sister group, they still are one of Japan’s biggest selling acts. Signs are good that their sales will continue to rise.
Next we have NMB48, based in Namba, Osaka.
Despite only releasing 3 singles, they have become a very formidable group in their own right. While their sales do not match that of their sister groups, they have decisively taken the number 1 spot for each of their first 3 singles, becoming the first ever Debuting act to do so. No doubt a lot of their success lies on the shoulders of AKB and SKE, but NMB are proving that they too belong up their with them with their consistently strong performance.
Finally.. a combined chart, to compare each of the groups sales.
What is interesting to note here, is that as each sister group is introduced, the previous group grows in sales and the new group carries on their previous trajectory. This leads me to believe that the combined exposure of the new groups helps the sales grow, as well as proving that Akimoto has a good eye for timing the début of new groups.
Some people believe AKB48 have peaked and will now enter a period of decline, I think this is an unfair assessment however. Each single still sells in excess of one million copies in its first week of sale. That is practically untouchable by anyone else in the world currently. While it took Lady Gaga 5 days to break one million sales with her single “Born this way.” Each of AKB48′s last 5 singles have done that in 2 days or less. If that’s decline, I’m sure many record executives the world over, would love to have those failings.
Out of interest…
