Everyone's favorite lil' rover, Curiosity, has now been rolling around Mars for two years. So it's high time Google Maps got in on the action―and now, to celebrate the anniversary, it's launched Maps for Mars and the Moon. Getting pin man into space is pretty easy, if you follow a few steps.
It's simple, as long as you know where you're going. First, open up Google Maps in your browser. Then, zoom out. Alllllll the way out. Once you're as far away as you can get, you should see a beautiful high-res rendering of Earth backlit by the Milky Way. Make sure the option bar at the bottom of your browser window is pulled up, and you'll see there are two other planetary options: The Moon and Mars.
Right now, each planet is labeled with major landscape features, like craters and mountains. You can click on each name to learn more, but it'd be amazing to have a more detailed way to explore, say, the spot where the Apollo 11 mission first touched down. There's actually an older, 2D map you can use to see those details, so maybe we'll eventually see it in Google Maps too.
And now that Rosetta has photographed the first comet ever intercepted by human technology, maybe someday we'll see a Google Maps entry for Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, too. [Google Maps; Engadget]

ついに来た！ グーグルマップで月や火星を探索する方法

宇宙がどんどん身近になっていきますなー！
みんなの大好きな探査ローバー「キュリオシティ」が火星で活動しはじめて約2年。そろそろグーグルマップが何か発表しても良い頃じゃないかなーと思っていたら、今回の2周年を記念して火星と月の地図が公開されました。
目的地さえ明確なら、操作はとてもシンプル。まず、ブラウザでグーグルマップを開きとにかくズーム・アウトしまくります。行けるとこまで行きつくと、ミルキーウェイを背にした高解像度の地球が見えてきますよ。と同時に、画面下のオプションバーに2つの惑星「月」と「火星」も顔を覗かせてきました！
世界地図で止まってしまう場合は、画面左下の「Earth（地球）」をクリックしましょう。
現在、それぞれの惑星には、クレーターや山など代表的な場所にラベルが追加されています。各々の地名をタップするとリンク先で詳細情報を確認できますが、アポロ11号が初めて月面着陸した辺りはとくに情報が充実。昔の二次元マップでも確認できる情報ですが、普段使っているグーグルマップと統合されると感慨もひとしおですよね。
ところで数日前、彗星探査機ロゼッタが太陽を周回する彗星の軌道に史上初めて到達したと欧州宇宙機関が発表しました。いつかグーグルマップがチュリュモフ・ゲラシメンコ彗星（67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko）の軌道に対応する日も来るのでしょうか？ その頃には「大気圏外の地図なんて知らない時代もあったんだよ」なんて会話も飛び交うんでしょうね。
