バイオリンは魔法の箱だ…私のバイオリンは今年310歳になった。
生みの親は、イタリアの天才職人、アントニオ・ストラディヴァリ…彼の作品はラテン語でストラディヴァリウスと呼ばれ、名器の代名詞となってきた。
世界中の垂涎の的、オークションでは12億円を超える値がついた事もある。ストラディヴァリウスの音は他に比べようがないほど美しい。
でもそれがどうやって生み出されたのか、実は誰もわかっていない…音の秘密はどこにあるのか、大勢の人々が謎の解明に挑戦し続けてきた。しかしまだ誰も彼を超えられない。
300年続くストラディヴァリウスのミステリー、…その謎に迫る旅に出た。

史上最高の名器とは…
ストラディヴァリウス…通称ストラド、クラシック界に君臨してきた史上最高のバイオリンです。
300年も前に作られたのに奏でる音色は唯一無二、その多くは数億円以上で取引されています。ラテン語の署名、 ”Antonius Stradivarius” が名器の証し、一つ一つに愛称が付けられ、歴代の名手によって受け継がれてきました。

天才職人の生涯
イタリア・クレモナ、この町でストラディヴァリが完成させたバイオリン作りは去年、ユネスコの世界無形文化遺産に登録されました。
今年9月にはバイオリン博物館が開館、ストラディヴァリの足跡をたどる優れたコレクションが集められました。

今、世界には約600丁のストラドが現存しています…ストラディヴァリは若い頃からその技術は天才的だと言われています。
そして次々と傑作を世に送り出した50代後半から70代は、ストラディヴァリの黄金期と呼ばれてきます。

ヘリエは象嵌細工が施されたバイオリン、楽器の淵が美しい象牙や宝石で彩られています…世界で数挺しか残っていません。
音色に加え、こうした芸術性の高さが人々を惹きつけ、世紀を超えて大切に守り継がれてきたのです。
彼が93歳で亡くなった後、技術が伝承される事はありませんでした…後を継いだ息子たちが相次いで亡くなり、その技は残されたものから推測するしかない謎となってしまったのです。

魔性のストラド伝説
ストラディヴァリが残したバイオリンは、数多くの物語を残しています。その数奇な逸話の一つをご紹介します。
ストラディヴァリ亡きあと工房には1丁の美しいバイオリンが残されていました…それを遺族から買い取ったのがコジオ・デ・サラブーエ伯爵、史上最初のストラドコレクターです。
この楽器の噂を聞きつけた男がルイージ・タリシオ、…バイオリンハンターです。パリシオはイタリア中の教会や城に眠っていたバイオリンを発掘、パリやロンドンで売り捌ぎ、荒稼ぎしていました。
サラブーエ伯爵の持つ、ストラドの傑作に目を付けたのです… ”あれならいくら儲けられるかわからないぞ” とね。
そして何度も頼みこみ高額で手に入れます…しかしタリシオは一目見るなり、魅了されてしまします。
依頼、このストラドは誰の目に触れることなく彼の部屋で眠り続けます。それから30年、パリシオは生涯をストラドの収集に捧げました。最後は屋根裏部屋で愛するバイオリンに囲まれて息を引き取ったと伝えられています。
パリシオの愛したストラドはいくつかの戦禍を免れ、今はイギリスの博物館に所蔵されています。

アシュモリアン博物館（イギリス・オックスフォード）に所蔵されているメシア、救世主と名付けられています。
メシアは世界で一番有名な楽器と言われています。現存する中で最も保存状態がよく、まるで昨日完成したかのようです。ストラドは時に手にした人の人生をも変えながら、人類の貴重な財産として受け継がれてきたのです。

音の秘密に挑む
いったいストラドの音はどこが特別なのでしょうか…今年3月、ニューヨークで一つの実験が行われました。
現代バイオリン VS. ストラディヴァリウス
現代の製作者が作ったバイオリンとストラドを聴き比べようというのです。審査員には、研究者、バイオリン製作者などの専門家です…結果は…
審査員の正解率は、2割～5割…実は、過去の実験でも専門家すら聞き分けるのは困難なのです。
しかし、実際にストラドを弾く演奏家には違いが明らかなのです。

…に協力していただき、実験では、20世紀以降に作られたモダンバイオリンと3人が愛用しているストラドを弾き比べます。
バイオリンを取り囲む42個のマイクでどの方向に、どの音が出ているか録音します。

「モダンの楽器はまんべんなくいろんな方向に音が飛んでます。『噴水みたいに』…ストラディヴァリウスは、ある特定な方位に集中して音が飛んでいます。『絞ったホースみたい』」
音を立体で見るとバイオリンから斜め上の方向に、赤い色の強い音の放射が見られます…これが今回見つかった指向性です。
この指向性は3丁のストラド全てに共通していました。ストラドの音がホールの奥まで届くのはこの指向性にあったのです。
ようやくその一端が明らかになったストラドの音。
* The mystery secret of * Stradivarius is wood?

Hutchins investigated thousands of boards including Strad, and it discovered that the board which produces a good sound drew signs that it was decided.
Hutchins's discovery had big influence on violin manufacture.
It is said by accumulation of research that a present-day violin is approaching Strad most in 300.
* A challenge of the mystery craftsmen of Stradivarius
He is one person to whom Japanese violin manufacture / repair people, Mr. Hirokazu Kubota, have challenged Strad paying attention to how to finish a board.
Mr. Kubota has dealt with repair of the old violin of Italy, such as Strad, for 30 years or more.
-- Repair is performed repeatedly during the years when many of old violins are long, and some repair material is stuck on the back side of the board.
Mr. Kubota removes this repair material, and while he fixes with thin Japanese paper etc., he says that how the board from the first was finished discovered.
Wherever a good violin may strike, the pitch of sound has gathered. -- Carrying out [ do not copy the size of Strad faithfully but while a finger strikes, hear the sound, and ] delicate adjustment, Mr. Kubota is that of なた so that a board may be shaved and manufactured.
Mr. Kubota thinks that only an ear and a fingertip are the craftsman work of reliance, and a key for which just this presses Strad.

Craftsmen have copied precisely from the density of a tree to a surface spot.

★★ストラディヴァリウスの謎
秘密は木材？
確かにストラドは特別な音がする…その秘密はストラドに使われた材料の木にあったのでは？…そんな説があります
ストラディヴァリが木材を仕入れていたイタリア北部・パナヴェッジョの森、…クレモラから北へ車で3時間、夏だというのに寒い、山には万年雪、標高1700メートル、その為、年輪の幅がとてもせまくなるのです。
この森の木はマツ科のスプルース、バイオリンの表板を作るのに使われます。年輪が均等に詰まっています。音が伝わりやすい最高級の板です。
良質な木の遺伝子を守るため、植林は行わず自然に生えた物だけを育ててきました。
他のバイオリン職人もこの木を使っていました…ですから使っていた木材だけがストラドの音の秘密ではありません
その答えとして昔から注目されていたのがストラド独特の深い赤色のニスでした。きっと何か特殊な成分が…19世紀から何人もの研究者がその生涯をかけてその謎に挑みました。
・絶滅した虫の羽根を入れていた
・ミツバチの巣からとれたプロポリスが入っている
・植物、鉱物などあらゆるものが試される
・若い女性の血の色だ
20世紀になると科学的な分析が出来るようになります…
・電子顕微鏡で赤い火山灰を発見
・殺虫剤の成分を見つけた
…しかし、何を混ぜてもストラドの音色にはなりません。
結局、21世紀に入ってニスを巡る伝説は否定される事になります…ヨーロッパの研究チームがパリにある5丁のストラドからニスを採取、数年をかけて見つかった成分は、 ”一般的な 『松やに』 と 『油』” 普通に使われていたニスだったのです。

ヒントはどこに？
ニューヨーク・メトロポリタン美術館、ここには、…
・1693年製 グルード（49歳）
・1694年製 フランチェスカ（50歳）
の2丁のストラドが所蔵されている…他の時代のものとは形が違います。
1690年頃の作品で他の時代より、少しだけボディーが長く作られているのです。…ストラディヴァリは、生涯にわたって様々な形を試しました。
ストラドを良く見るとｆ字請孔の位置や形がボディーのカーブが時代によって微妙に異なっている、音には違いがあるのだろうか。

形が違っても独特の音が出るのは、ストラドの作り方そのものに何か秘密があるのではないか…そこに着目し解明に挑んだのがアメリカのバイオリン製作者、カーリン・ハッチンスです。

「良い音色を生み出しカギは、表板と裏板がどう振動するかにある」
ハッチンスは、バイオリンの板に音波を当てその特徴を探り当てる研究をしました…細かな粒子を捲いて振動させると板の材質、硬さによって様々な模様を描きます。
ハッチンスは、ストラドを含め、数千の板を調べ、良い音を生み出す板は決まった模様を描く事を発見したのです。
ハッチンスの発見はバイオリン製作に大きな影響を及ぼしたのです。
研究の蓄積によって現代のバイオリンは、300年で最もストラドに近づきつつあると言われています。
★ストラディヴァリウスの謎
職人たちの挑戦
日本のバイオリン製作・修理人の窪田弘和さんも板の仕上げ方に注目してストラドに挑んでいる一人です。
窪田さんは30年以上、ストラドなどイタリアの古いバイオリンの修理を手掛けてきました。…古いバイオリンの多くは、長い年月の間に何度も修理が行われ、板の裏側にはいくつかの補修材が貼られています。
窪田さんはこの補修材を剥がし、薄い和紙などで修理を行ううちに、元々の板がどう仕上げられていたかを発見したと言います。
良いバイオリンは、どこを叩いても音の高さが揃っている…窪田さんはストラドの寸法を忠実にコピーするのではなく、指で叩きながらその音を聞いて微妙な調整をしながら、板を削って製作するようになたのです。耳と指先だけが頼りの職人技、これこそがストラドに迫る鍵ではないかと窪田さんは考えています。

「ストラディヴァリは音程で考えていた人だと思います。やはり楽器だから耳優先、音で考えなきゃいけない、感じなきゃ…何ミリとか目でやると音は駄目になってしまうんです」
窪田さんのバイオリンは、ヨーロッパの演奏家たちからも評価され始めています。

究極のコピーを作れ
ストラディヴァリウスの謎に迫ろうとする職人たちの挑戦、今、新たな広がりを見せています。
オハイオ州・オーバリン大学に各国からトップクラスの製作者が60人集合、お互いの技術や知識を共有しています。
・板の微妙な部分はどう削ったらいいのか
・どんな構造のバイオリンが良く響くのか
…こうした交流の成果でここ数年、製作者の技術は飛躍的に向上しました。

「長い間、こういう状況はあり得ませんでした。みんな技術は秘密にしていましたから…オーバリンがそれを変えたのです」
去年このオーバリンで記念碑的なバイオリンが完成しました…参加している職人の智恵と技を結集し、最高のストラドコピーを作ったのです。
その現在最高のストラドコピーが所蔵されているのは、ワシントンD.C.・アメリカ議会図書館です。
オリジナルは、1704年製・ベッツ…ベッツは保存状態、カーブの美しさなどでストラディヴァリ最高傑作の一つと言われています。
職人たちは、木の密度から表面のシミに至るまで精密にコピーしています。音色はどうなのか…
