Hello everyone, Ho Ho Ho greetings from South Africa. We really hope everyone has a lovely & safe xmas.Yesterday was the Orphans Christmas Party here at Zululand Yacht Club at Richard's Bay yacht Club. It is a wonderful club with pool and miles of lawn and trees, there were mobs of wonderfully happy kids bouncing, swimming, running and yelling all day. Best of all, there is a huge air con bar room with big screen TV. So we were able to escape the 38C temp & festivities and enjoy the cricket. We are loving South Africa, it is almost like being in Australia. The people are overwhelmingly friendly, the lady who owns the laundry is my new best friend and has taken me shopping and to the movies and all sorts of lovely girly things. The locals are very sports aware, especially against Oz and NZ . I have been having quite regular visits to a lovely dentist and Friday was my last visit for the extraction of the offending molar, as I walked into the surgery both the Dentist and his Assistant announced that they would not be using anaesthetic that day unless I could convince the Aussie Cricketers to co-operate & let S. Af. catch up!! We have only been in South Africa for a few weeks and have caught up with lots of old friends. Some yachts we haven't seen for many years, they have found themselves enjoying life here so much they are staying. Our dollar against the Rand means we have lovely spending ability, combined with our first time in a MALL for about two years so I am making the most of it. All the shops have walls and most even have a Door!! South Africa has wonderful shoe shops... and a MacDonalds. Yippee! I am a happy girl. One of the nicest surprises has been seeing our dear friend Glynn from the big yacht Deja Vu. Sadly her husband Colin was killed in a yachting accident off the Australian coast earlier this year. Colin was a rear commodore of the Zululand Yacht Club and one of their sons lives here still. Glynn sailed Deja Vu from Gladstone back to Kota Kinabalu in Borneo, her future plans are understandably vague but she thinks she will stay in S. E. Asia with the boat for the time being at least. Glynn looks really well and is enjoying the company of young grandchildren and friends here for xmas. In our minds and many of her friends here in South Africa she has been promoted to legendary status. This last year has been great fun for us. We began with a safari. My Mum joined us in Tanzania and we did lots of stuff, Zanzibar Island, sailing on Columbus, Eating in local restaurants (great food plus lots of dust and cats), learning to speak a little swahili, the highlight of her visit was definitely The Serengetti . It was wonderful, you can not believe the amount of animals. We saw them all. Amazing to see Elephant up really close, and so many Zebra we were sick of them, Giraffe wander across the road in front of the vehicle, man are they ever a weird looking animal. We were able to witness part of the massive wildebeest migration. We only saw only pair of Lion but hundreds of Hippo, and even a Leopard. The highlight was a hot air balloon safari where Mum spotted a cheetah feeding - We saw heaps of game from the balloon and then set down to have a fabulous silver service champagne breakfast under a solitary plane tree. Our pilot was a lovely young Aussie guy and his parents happened to be in the balloon with us. Mum was chatting to them - as she does - and it turns out that many years ago they lived at Salt Creek, a tiny windy desolate community about 100kms from where I grew up. Only my Mum could travel 6000 miles across the world, be in the middle of deepest darkest Africa, on the the remote Serengetti plains, in a balloon at 0400am in the morning with 8 complete strangers AND Mum knows 2 of them.. Really nice to share such a lovely experience with Mum. In April we sailed down the Tanzanian and Mozambique coast in company with Heinz and Patricia on their catamaran Papagena, (they definitely won the fishing competition) We had some adventures sailing with a catamaran, at one point we were seriously on tip toes and had about 10cm of water under our keel! but must agree it did save us about 20 miles sailing around that island. Lots of lovely day sailing and sheltered bay and islands and more clear water and seafood. We spent 1 month in the French Territory Island of Mayotte where we caught up with The Barnacle C's, we climbed a mountain (it was huge but John still insists it was a small hill, we ate loads of baguettes and cheese and learned to drink pastise while we waited for a new autopilot to be air freighted in. Then a short sail on to Madagascar, we really enjoyed both of these countries. Our abysmal french did improve slightly, well just enough for us to be able to order a beer at a bar and to be able to leave the market with almost what we wanted. Madagascar has lovely beaches and seafood, one of a bag of prawns we traded for a large glass jar was 23cm long. We had regular visits from dolphin, plenty of whales up really close, while we were at Cosmeldo atoll a whale fell in love with Columbus and spent several hours cuddling and smooching our hull. We played with lemurs, and giant tortoise and swam & snorkeled in crystal clear water, I spent a week on our friends luxurious and spacious catamaran Amarula to babysit my friends Chui and Scrumpy ( Jack Russell's) whilst Eric & Lynne went off on safari. ho hum. From Madagascar we went back to Tanzania and after 6 months away it was like coming home, great to see familiar faces again, the Dar-Es-Salaam yacht club is very welcoming. In fact I am certain we spent much more time at the bar than we did on board Columbus. During one of the many Happy Hours our friends on our sister ship "Strong Legs" suggested we join them and sail in company down to South Africa. Ha Ha Ha, everyone knows we are definitely returning to Asia early in 2009. HA HA HA ! Well Yachties plans are set in custard ( the warm and lumpy kind) so here we are in South Africa after a quick and almost uneventful trip in the 2 to 3 knot current down the Mozambique Coast. (too boring to go into details but we had to be towed into Richard's Bay by the Rescue Boat in the middle of the night whilst a 30 knot Southerly storm raged and our almost new engine wouldn't start... BUGGER! The Port Control wouldn't let us sail into the largest coal loading port in the southern hemisphere whilst huge ships are maneuvering!! how civilized is that!) We are now gathering charts for Brazil, from there - who knows. There are two events happening next year which might see us both redeem some frequent flyer points and return to Oz briefly. My gorgeous niece is returning from Holland with her bloke for her 30th birthday. I am really hoping we are not halfway across the Atlantic Ocean in February and can join her and my family in Lucindale for that party. And Fitz has a reunion of sorts he would love to attend. About 40 years ago someone took a snapshot of a few very young men dressed in army greens having a beer before departing for Vietnam. Fitz was about 23 years old and by far the oldest in the group, anyway all the surviving blokes have been tracked down and a reunion is planned on the gold coast in mid year. He would love to attend but who knows where we will be and even if there will be an airport in the vicinity. . Must go and bake myself a birthday cake. I dont mind Christmas zooming around again so quickly but am becoming very alarmed at how rapidly my birthday seems to appear these days. Best wishes to everyone for a lovely safe and happy christmasWe will be sure to raise a toast to you alllive it up and lotsa luvfrom Trish, Fitz, Banjo and Trim.xxxxxx
